The SPORT PART is off-roading and crashing and bashing through the trees and over the rocks and gullies.

The UTILITY PART is the ability to be loaded up with all type of cargo for work purposes.

At least that was the original intent. Now most of them are luxury poseur mobiles that will never be driven off paved roads. There are still a few manufacturers that build true 'sport-utility' vehicles but most are just badge engineered luxury vehicles built on car platforms with an AWD package underneath.

I think it's an off-road thing. Typically associated with extreme sports and the means to access the area of which they typically take place.

i dont know what a SPORT -UNTILTY is but i think you're reffering to the long version of the abbreviation SUV and it's a sports car that kind of looks like a station wagon on drugs and you can load lots of things in it and also take it off road since its a lot higher off the ground comapared to grandma's buick or oldsmobile or other boat like that .

Probably for the sounds more then anything. Also the idea of soccer moms driving them. More taking them to the sports and carrying equipment. The funny thing is if you look at the shape of the SUV one of the first was a JEEP, it was the Cherokee(which ISN'T an SUV, it's still a Jeep in my view). Honestly I think it's just a way to sell vehicles.

A sport utility vehicle (SUV) is a generic marketing description for a vehicle similar to a station wagon but built on a light-truck chassis.

Usually equipped with four-wheel drive for on or off-road ability.
