There is a real reason:
Its to make the long load driver confirm thier vehicle will cross and clear the junction by "walking the route". They also need to confirm they have cleared the crossing so it makes sense to have the phoen on the exit side of the crossing |

Doesn't matter - if you are transporting an abnormal load then you should have done your research a long time before. It's not the sort of thing you can just turn around anywhere, much the same as a normal load, you ain't a driver if you don't know where you are going and how you are gonna get there. |

They're not as a rule. There should be a phone both sides of the crossing. They may not all be on the left side of the road though.
In fact, I have never seen one that's been on the wrong side. It could be that your local crossing's been vandalised. |

because if you follow the recommended route ,either by map.roadsigns or satnav{maybe},then any professional driver,which is what you would need to be to drive heavy,long loads,you would enter the junction or crossing in the right direction. |

good question, I've often wondered this myself as I used to drive class1 lorry's, never had such a large load though that I needed to use one, but have often seen this curious setup with the phones.I presume that the Department of Transport would have the answer? best of luck. |
