because by the time a problem is realized it is to late to get everyone in parachutes and out the door at a safe height to be able to open them. Most people would not be able to put them on fast enough when they know they are going down, and they would not know when to open them, or control them so they would run into each other and end up free falling to the earth anyway. Also most pilots notice problems with the plain during take off and landing that is when most problems happen any way. That is why most airports take off toward watter because if the plain dose go down they are not going to kill any one else |

Unless you've been trained how to get into and use one, and 99% of passengers havn't been trained, it's pointless to provide them. Any dummy can grab a flotation device. |

How in the hell are you going to get all people aboard to jump? Nonetheless you have a good point. |

The instance of lifejackets, and liferafts being used succesfully are virtually non-existant.
Prehaps the main reason parachutes arnt carried is that an airliner still flying still has a chance to land, so ejecting from a flying plane is very much a gamble, even in fighter jets, this of could open the door for many lawsuits and would make evacuation decisions very difficult |

Because parachutes won't keep you from drowning?
Seriously, most plane crashes involve hurtling towards earth at speeds that are difficult to imagine. In these scenarios it is unlikely that having a parachute would do any good being as deployment at crash speeds would tear the chute to threads and/or break your neck as it deployed. If the damaged plane is able to maintain the speed and altitude required to allow people to jump then it isn’t damaged enough to warrant jumping in the first place. You’ll be safer staying on board as they make an emergency landing, possibly over water, in which case you will want all the flotation devices you can get.

If,you are fortunate to survive the crash, and you land in water this helps you float....Good Luck |

Since most of the Earth is water, chances are your plane will be over water. |
