Why are windscreens made of glass ?

surely, wouldn't perspex be a better material to use ?

Perspex is easily scratched so would need replacing regularly. Im pretty sure that car manufaturers have invested lots of cash in researching windscreen materials and havn't come up with anything better than glass.

glass doesnt melt easy, bend easy or scratch easy :)
plus its clear & keeps you insulated

perspex wasnt a round when they started making them and wood you cant see thru and perspex or plex glass turns yellow and dries out and cracks

Toughened glass is the best material for the job.
It as high light transmission
Best re scratch resistance
In an accident it breaks into many tiny bits.

Other possible materials are plastics such as polycarbonate or Perspex.

These have the advantage of being lighter so increased fuel efficiency but are not as good re scratch performance and if they do break in an accident they break into sharp bits.

These plastics are finding some uses in smaller rear windows of some cars.
Perspex is acrylic which does last a long time re weathering performance.
Polycarbonate although stronger than Perspex when new does weather badly and become weak over time.

Perspex windscreens wouldn't be able to cope at high speeds for all the reasons people have listed. You can see perspex sometimes on scooters as they don't go fast enough it doesn't matter.

Perspex isn't hard enough. What's wrong with glass? Have all the motor manufacturers got it wrong all this time? Doh!

Glass is used because it is nice and strong and cannot be stratched easy

perspex is not durable enough to last under the conditions that a car would be exposed to all the time and it would scratch real easy,and it wasn't around when windshields were first being made,glass is also use because its safety issue,it will hold a passenger back in case of an accident,it will stop them from going through ,and that alone could save their life.good luck.
