On a one to one basis women are not "safer".
In fact it has been shown that they are actually less safe due to various reasons such as spacial awareness, ability to estimate speed and distance etc.
Conviction rate is not an exact indication of overall safety or driving ability.
Men overall cover many more miles and there are more male drivers therefore their conviction rate will be higher as there is more chance of them getting caught.
Women tend to cover shorter urban journeys and therefore their driving is slower and accidents tend to be relatively minor. |

a lot of women drivers have children in the car so they would drive extra safely, aslo a lot of guys like speed. |

It's mostly men who drive, and when they do, their other half nags them to the point of crashing :P |

Because for some reason men seem more interested in impressing their friends than staying alive and healthy!! However, I am talking generally, not all men are like this. However of all the stupid drivers I have come accross it is always men/boys who want to look good infront of their friends by driving stupidly fast in an old banger of a car that can't handle that sort of speed!! Women don't seem to care as much unless they are chavs. |

Cause women are better drivers. They just are. Whether men can face up to it or not. Its cheaper for women to get insurance. This is a well known fact. It's only the men who can't face up to it. |

I think the majority of lady drivers drive more carefully and with less speed. Men are inclined to gamble whilst ladies are a little more conservative. |

I believe that women are a lot safer at driving, because in most cases men like to show off to other men, or to women their sweet talents, and they don't really want to go within the speed limits etc. |

Women might not be directly involved, but the leave a trail of destruction behind them. |

because we all think we a race drivers and of course some of us are not! Also women are a lot more tolerant of other road users and tend not to see "The Red Mist" when cut up by some maniac or blinded at night, by some pratt who cant dip his/her 500 watt lights!! grrrr... |

Because most male drivers can get whats called Adrenaline rush, where they feel like they need to drive at full speed to get the thrill. plus a lot of female drivers are a lot more mature then male drivers. |

Some men let their ego drive whereas women are less inclined to show off in the same way. My wife is a more cautious driver than me but has been involved in more accidents - not always her fault but some driving styles can mislead other drivers into making mistakes. Are women safer drivers or do they just have fewer accidents and get warnings rather that tickets from male police officers? On balance though, I'd have to agree that men tend to be more dangerous on the road. |

Men are over confident. They loose respect of the vehicle. Women are more cautious when it comes to driving. This doesn't mean that they are better drivers it just means they are less likely to put the petal to the medal. |

If you could break the statistics down by age, you would probably find the greatest difference is in adolescent and young adult drivers, when boys show a much greater attraction to speed and thrill-seeking than girls, reputedly due to a surge in testosterone levels. By middle age, the difference between men and women drivers would likely be less startling, although women still tend to place a high premium on safety than men do at any age. |

Testosterone increases the urge in a man's brains to engage in reckless or dangerous activities. |

Even though men love saying that a woman behind the wheel as well as the one on board the ship causes trouble, the fact remains; women are safer drivers than men
The whole issue here is about two completely different things being a better driver and being a safer driver. If you are skilled enough to drive your car with your eyes closed and your hands in your pockets it's great. However, is it worth the risk? Statistically most men are more predisposed to taking risk and adventures than women. They might be and most likely are better drivers than women. The word better here means more skilled, professional or resourceful. Men are better convergers and decision makers. One can see that at least by the fact that there are very few famous female racers while there are many professional male race car drivers.
Thus we see that men are more skillful drivers. But here comes another question are men safer drivers than women? That is the aspect where most men lose their superiority over women and sink in the estimation of insurance agents. Have you ever seen a man who drives along wide open and suddenly rushes through the traffic to pass the lights before it flashes red exposing his family members and himself to unjustified risk? I think you have, and probably many times. Have you ever seen a woman doing the same thing? I doubt it.
Any insurance company wants to make sure the drivers are not going to cause problems. They don't want an experienced racer like Michael Schumacher or Mario Andretti who'll be running around at high speed and demonstrating how cool he is. They want a cautious lady who'll understands the responsibility and can actually feel the velocity. |
