No one ever seems to follow this up nd repair them so what is the point

You're right, the "Highways Inspectors" or whatever they call them mark these things but they never seem to get done.

With our council you can report these matters on line and they have to take action - even if it's just noted and postponed - because the auditors can track incoming e-mails and what was done with them. They can't "lose" your complaint. Works quite well, especially if the auditors are due . . . I did this recently, there was a marked pothole growing daily and once I'd pointed it out it was done within 24 hours.

Could it be to detect unauthorized pothole repairing? If someone does repair a pothole, but does not remove the yellow lines, then the yellow lines without a pothole inside them will make it obvious that someone has filled a pothole. If terrorists put bombs in potholes and then repaired the potholes, the yellow lines could be used to find where the potholes had been, so that the bombs could be removed.

To show the repair contractors which potholes to fill in and temporarily repair. The filling usually comes out with the first rain and the early frost

it means the highway dept. knows its there but they don't have time to fix it<<
