Why aren't there seat belts on public buses?

Friendly Stranger..
Seat belts are not required for children or passengers on buses because of the hazard they can cause. What I mean is, seat belts would be more of a danger than a help. If a bus is involved in an accident you have a greater risk of injury if the bus topples over or is crushed. If you are in the wreckage in your seat belt, you are then pinned in the bus which could cause more injury. It would also hamper any safety efforts because in an accident the emergency respondents would have to go through each part of the bus to un-pin each passenger. If they are pinned in then it would mean more injury and it could take longer to get them out of the wreckage.

Bus driver would have to buckle up kids, bus too big to get damage, when it comes to seat belts/ air bags, people don't know how to drive, only way is fast, which doesn't get you there any faster

i've always wondered this also..

because you do not pay enough in taxes to cover the cost. just write a large check and say that it must be used for seat belts. if you want it you ought to be willing to pay for it<

Who would enforce it? The driver has to drive the bus.

For the same reason there arnt seat belts on cattle trucks.
Your operator couldnt give two hoots about your safety and losing one or two in journey is after all a fairly go ratio.

It is time prohibitive.

Compartmentalization, a concept seen frequently on commercial airplanes, involves seating passengers in rows of padded seats with cushioned backs.

The belief is that during frontal or rear impact, the most common types of wrecks involving buses, passengers would either be pushed back into their seats or thrown forward into the padded backs of the row ahead.

The use of seat belts might require stiffer seats, which would negate the theory of compartmentalization. It is also feared that some people would receive internal injuries from seat belts through a process called submarining, the tendency for a body to slide downwards during impact.

Seat belts on buses may also hamper rescue or evacuation efforts, as adults or older people may have to spend precious minutes unbuckling.

Unruly people could also use the heavy buckles as makeshift weapons, creating even more of a safety hazard.
