Why arent handicap parking stalls placed further away? If they have a real problem,they shouldnt be driving.?

You have got to be kidding. That is so very insulting and you have no idea how difficult it is to truly be handicapped. While it may be difficult for you to believe, not all people with disabilites are in a wheelchair. There are many "hidden" disabilities that make it difficult to walk long distances or physically exert oneself. These disabilities also do not change the ability to drive. I'm 29, female, & drive a nice car & use a hanging handicapped placard. I'm not in a wheelchair, but I'm disabled. I bet you think I'm one of those people that are "perfectly healthy" and that others think are abusing the system.
It is not easy to get a handicapped permit. The permit is only to be used for driving a person with a disability... so the driver can be healthy... a passenger can be disabled. If you have multiple cars, or are driven in other cars, you can use a hangtag placard. If you only have one car, you can apply for a permanent handicapped license plate. I prefer not to get the plate. What if I let someone borrow my car? The person to whom the placard belongs also carries a wallet card. Handicapped spots are frequently completely filled where I live. Around here, there aren't enough spaces. WHY would you force someone with a disability to walk further than a person who is healthy? Shouldn't you just be glad you are healthy and grateful that you can make it the extra distance?
Also, as others have so absurdly intimated, all people who are handicapped are not jobless or on welfare. I am at the top of my field in spite of my disability.
I am also extremely disturbed that you think that disabled people shouldn't be driving. We have so many obstacles to overcome & so many uphill battles to fight already. Why would you think that you should take a freedom away from us so you could park closer? I shouldn't be able to live the most normal life I can live and drive? My disability doesn't make it difficult for me to drive. You need a serious reality check. And I hope you never come across me and my Range Rover when I'm pulling into a handicapped spot at the grocery store. I'll have an earful for you.

I have a relative that at first glance, looks:

1. Healthy and tan
2. Fit and trim
3. Smiling and happy

But if you knew her well, you would know that she looks healthy, tan, fit, and trim as a result of:

1. a very restrictive diet;
2. cardiac rehab sessions 3 days a week
3. a strategically hidden mini-oxygen tank with a tiny tube wound over her ear, through her beautifully coifed hair, into her nose;
4. countless, daily medications, and
5. she's on a heart transplant waiting list.

The only thing that makes me sadder than watching this wonderful lady silently suffer, is the ignorance of people who think she's abusing the system because she isn't in a wheelchair, or has a cast on her leg, or some such nonsensical "evidence" of a disability. Perhaps you see yourself in that description?????

Just be glad you're young, healthy and physically able to walk. I'm old, healthy and damned glad I'm still physically able to walk. It gets harder every year and sometimes it's painful but I don't mind the people who have the stickers. If the doctors feel they need them then so be it. I have a few friends who look OK but I know that the wounds they suffered years ago make it impossible to walk very far without excruciating pain. I wouldn't swap my good health for their problems and handicap stickers for any amount of money.

Maybe you'll get the opportunity to display one of those tags yourself as a matter of fact Im sure you will and when you do park as far away as you like.

from just looking at a person
(I know this since I myself have Asperger's syndrome

Most handicapped people who have valid drivers' licenses and have passed driving tests in not many years ago, are good, careful drivers -- they just have difficulty in operating well on their feet. They are issued special drivers' license plates for their cars, and they are assigned special parking spaces which are closest to the entrance doors of merchants who appreciate their handicap and their business. You're not somewhat unappreciative of your youth and good health, are you? EH?!?

missing a leg or using a walker is obvious but you can "look" perfectly health and have a heart condition, asthema, cancer or a number of other ailments. do not let your eyes judge, there are some things you can not see.

looks can be deceiving, you can have a handicap without
it being very noticeable, some people have breathing problems, or problems with circulation, etc.

You obviously have never had a slipped disk or any other ailment that limits mobility. Can you look at someone and tell that they have lung cancer or TB or AIDS for that matter. If you think you can you are living dangerously. Just because someone isn't obviously limping or bent over Etc doesn't mean nothing is wrong with them.

Handicap doesn't mean that you need to be missing an arm or a leg, you can have mental defects as well and the closer the parking space, the easier it will be for that person.

As for the statement that they should not be driving, have you lately looked at the way that people without disabilities drive.

i think if you have the tag..you should be the only one driving that car..i think its wrong to see someone get out of a car not limp nothing looks wrong with them...makes you wonder if they are not using someone elses tag..i think the licenses should have to have it on there as well..with a freakin picture stop that passing the tag around in the family

You can get a handicap parking permit for so many things. Just say it hurts to walk, and bam, you get a permit. I think it is BS, and why are there 500 handicap spots in a parking lot? Have you ever seen them all used? I think they should just have to park with everyone else. And why do fat people always use the power carts in the store? Get up and walk, there is a reason you are fat!

you're not kidding! my theory is...if you can walk, talk, and drive- you can work. I work at a job where is is obvious that a lot of these people are scamming the system.
I can't figure it out. You don't have to be disabled to be on disability, but yet theres millions of children in this country that don't have health insurance.
P.S. Work harder-millions on welfare are counting on you!
