to do with the rake of the window suvs and vans have rear windows that are straight up so the windflow causes the dirt to stick too them on saloon cars the rear window is at an angle so the airflow helps keep them clear subaru once fitted a rear wiper too a saloon car and it was useless above a certain speed as it lifted away from the glass

THE REAL REASON:
The rear of vans and wagons have that gigantic vertical, flat surface. when the air goes over and around the vehicle, there are swirling eddy currents back there kicking dirt up onto the glass. You don't get this on cars.

Have you ever seen a station wagon and some vans with the little wing that forces air down from the roof? These help keep the dirt blown off the glass AND keeps exhaust fumes from lurking in those eddy currents and seeping into the rear window or door.

The auto industry cares more about style than functionality. A windshield wiper on the back window of a sleek sedan would be unsightly.

Kidd!
I think they would be very helpful but I don't think they are really necessary.

aerodynamics. Typically on a sedan the wind will blow off the rain and there isn't any wheel spray on the rear windshield. On vans and suv's the Aerodynamics doesn't allow for the rain to blow off and rear wheel spray collects on the rear window.

because of the way the auto is designed. suvs and wagons don't have a trunk and need them and regular cars don't

They go fast enough that you don't need them... lol

Just kidding. I dunno. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the rear windows on cars are sloped, whereas the rear windows on bigger vehicles are more straight up-and-down. (Wouldn't it make sense to have it switched around then?! xp)

Its in the design,A large suv does not have a the downward slant of the back window for the air to flow over...It needs the wiper, because the wind kinda passes it by,as opposed to rolling over it,thus not taking the water and debris with it..
