They can create a static discharge that can possibly ignite the fumes surrounding the filler nozzle.
Remember to touch the metal surface of the fuel pump before grabbing the nozzle to discharge any static buildup in your body. |

I actually saw that myth disproved on Mythbusters - they tried everything and couldn't get a mobile phone to set off an explosion... that being said, it's better to be safe than sorry. I wouldn't use my phone, just in case! |

because this causes static electricity, Imagine the debt you will inherit for blowing up a gas station along with a bunch of innocent people all because of a phone call. |

People, especially women, tend to get back in the car and talk. When you exit the car and reach for the pump handle, you can discharge static elctricity in the gas fumes. |

because, in all the confusion, you might mistake your cell phone for the gas nozzle and accidentally drink gas. then a static electricity discharge will occur w/ your cell phone and you're fukt. |

First off, I wish everyone would stop putting so much stock into "Myth Busters", these are two knuckle heads that do not conduct experiments properly, it's always done out of a car trunk or garage (HARDLY SCIENTIFIC PROOF OF ANYTHING), it is merely a show that replaced another sh-tty show "Junk Yard wars", a Cell phone has a ringer on it, a speaker, speakers make sparks when they work, you do not want any sparks around you while re-fueling with something as volatile as Gasoline ! |

The beleif that cellphones make a static discharge is an old wives tale(as proven on mythbusters). I beleive personally, that with a cellphone, you should be able to create a EMF signal that could change the calibration of the pump.... its all electronic right? |
