You are also supposed to touch something that would diffuse the static electricity that has gathered in your body so the static will not cause an explosion when you touch the pump handle.

I am not sure. MythBusters proved nothing would happen. But, I guess there is always a slim chance....

The idea of prohibiting the use of handphones at gas stations is because gasoline is highly combustible, meaning that it could burn so fast with a minimal amount of trigger. Handphones or cellular phones create some sort of electromagnetic wave while being used that might trigger combustion. I think its just a precautionary measure because i havent heard of news that handphone caused gas fire much less trigger explosion.

If you would notice, its not the only thing prohibited at stations. Running engine is also one for much the same reason.

There's nothing wrong with following instructions/prohibitions because they are there for a purpose.

It's so you will watch what you are doing. If you are on the phone and the pump doesn't turn off you will react slower than if you are just watching the pump. It has yet to be proven cellphones cause gas station fires. most are caused by a spark, because the person didn't toutch the car when geting out or got back in there car while fueling. Alot of the gas stations around here are removing the clip that keeps the gas flowing when you release the handle so you can't walk away. You also want to turn your car off while fueling...I am seeing more and more people that leave their car running while fueling.

It depends on your phone; if it is not certified for hazardous environments, I would not risk it. Besides; you are supposed to be paying attention to what you are doing not talking on the phone while your gas overflows on the ground.

I didn't know it was verboten. I suppose under just the right conditions it might ignite vapors but the chance of that would be extremely high.

I don't know if the handphone will cause an explosion or not, but why would you want to risk it???? I don't care if you blow yourself up or not, but I may be in the same station at the same time.
