Why didn't my airbag deploy?

I drive(drove) a 2001 PT Cruiser. I was involved in an accident where I was rear ended on an icy highway. I was at a complete stop and was hit by a car going about 55mph. My car is totaled and completely caved in. Shouldn't my airbags have gone off? Or do those only deploy when involved in a head on colission?

They wouldn't deploy because the sensor wasn't reading it because you got hit from the rear end. Usually the sensor reads off of your speed like if you crash into a pole at 55 mph and go from 55 to a dead stop or almost they will deploy. Ive had friends that have hit trees at like 20 mph in the front and they never went off. Depends on the manufacture on when the sensor will read to trip off the airbag

Front airbags only deploy in front end collisions*


* Even then they may not deploy if your vehicle is hit at a speed less than it takes to set up the airbags or if a larger (taller) vehicle than yours hits you above the sensors.

Airbags deploy only when they might be needed to prevent serious injury.

Frontal driver and passenger airbags are designed to inflate in moderate to severe "frontal crashes" equivalent to hitting a solid barrier at 10-12 mph.

Some manufacturers use different inflation thresholds depending on whether people are using their safety belts.

Thresholds of 10-12 mph typically are used for unbelted occupants, but thresholds are higher — about 16 mph — for belted occupants because the belts alone are likely to provide adequate protection up to these moderate speeds.
