Sometimes when you're driving it's difficult to tell the depth of a puddle or the splash it will make and where it will land. Don't forget you can't actually see your front wheel when you're driving.
Not all drivers are extremely inconsiderate: you are generalising.
They probably did it because you are a student, and we all know students are extemely inconsiderate, loud music, drunken shouting late at night.
Come on, don't take yourself so seriously.
It is quite funny, yes ? ;) |

I think alot of people enjoy being cruel to other people. I try to stand back from the puddles if I can. |

Big Tip, Stand clear of puddles, if there is a car coming the other way you cant avoid the puddles. |

Why stand near a huge puddle surely you don't need to go to university to know that if a car comes by your going to get wet!!!!!! |

I am sure that a lot of drivers don't even see the puddle. I certainly wouldn't do it deliberately. |

Sometimes it really is an accident, whenever I drive along I usually avoid them, but sometimes I hit them by accident. It PROBABLY wasn't on purpose. But yes society is effed up. |

It's fun if there's nobody about and if you can get all the wheels in so spray goes both ways.
Now Heidi's mum, are these the same cyclists who think red traffic lights don't apply to them, who think that screaming downhill at well over the speed limit and wobbling like fury is cool? |

Brilliant Han !!
The question you should REALLY ask is WHY does the Roads Department put those puddles in the way of drivers ??
The puddle is in the road, the car is on the road... it's not smart or safe to swerve for a puddle. JUST as it's not safe to be driving faster than conditions !!
I've been dumped on a dozen times as a pedestrian or bicyclist... I try to watch out for MYSELF !!
IF the driver did it intentionally, then YES then are inconsiderate and will get a karmic jolt later in life.
Otherwise, it was an accident, and accidents happen. |

Yeah, the roads are filled with inconsiderate drivers. I used to live in a apartment complex and drivers would always speed through the parking lot at high rates of speed. I always hated walking across the parking lot when it was raining because drivers rarely slowed down or stopped to let me walk across the parking the lot and a lot of times I would get splashed with water. I can understand that sometimes it is unavoidable because I have hit them myself on occasion. However, if you are driving slow like you are supposed to in a parking lot or near a pedestrian cross walk your chances of avoiding the puddle are a lot lower. Unfortunately a lot of drivers don't even think about stuff like that. They are too busy thinking about where they gotta go and how fast they need to get there. |

surely you'd have to drive through a puddle to splash someone, driving over it wouldn't have any effect. |

some do it because they think it is cute some do it because they are not even paying attention to what is going on around them and some because they really do not care one way or another till it is them out there and it happens to them |

Amask, who looks after you when you are out alone,YOU DO.You have a duty of care to look after yourself,to stand by a large pool of water when traffic is coming,NO WAY ,i would move away until it was safe to cross without getting splashed. You would not step into a bear trap would you----same thing. |

Yes society has really lost that much respect for each other. We live in a time where many people find in enjoyable to watch and make people suffer. Many people would pass someone in the street begging for help, without giving them a second look. Many people find ruining someones day entertaining and it lifts their spirits to see people suffer. And the worst part of that is if something like that were to happen to them, they would likely be more upset then you are. What a wonderful world. |

Reading the above answers it really make me wonder what has happened to the world, the idiots who think it is fun to splash pedestrians should be banned, it is against the law and if caught you can be fined or banned, and so you bloody should be, there is no reason to do it, if there is a puddle and a person you slow down and pass without a splash, but then that would be showing consideration to another human being, that will never do will it, seems most people now have the sod everyone else attitude, the same people who splash are probably the same who don't stop for amber lights anymore but think they are exempt, tick tok, tick tok, one day you will kill someone hopefully only yourselves. |

I guess some people just like to do things for a laugh. Yes it's cruel and mean but it's just the way people are! It's happened to me so many times, at a busy road outside my University, which always seems to gather the hugest puddles.
In a society where people have so little respect for themselves, it's hard to believe that they would care about anyone else. |

Yes, drivers are extremely inconsiderate, they also like to cut up or splash cyclists so I know exactly how you feel, I also find that they are conceited enough to thing that they don't need to stay sober, or off drugs or wear a seat belt.
I think you should put it behind you and just revel in the fact that you are better person than them, they probably have an inferiority complex.
One day they will get their commupance.

"displacement" is the answer.
The vehicle, being heavy, overcomes the surface tension of the water, and violently displaces it. The sudden displacement gives the water enough force to temporarily overcome gravity.
As you are a pedestrian, you are probably unaware of the difficulty and danger involved in attempting to slow or stop a vehicle suddenly on wet pavement. The alternative to having water splashed on your person would be to have your person splashed on the pavement by an out of control skidding vehicle.
you said "whoever did it probably laughed and must have known. " How long have you been able to hear the thoughts of others? Have you seen a doctor about this? |

The thrill! I saw a massive puddle one day and everyone was driving round it, all the people i was with crossed the road to avoid getting splashes, i gave them all a big story on how they should not loose all hope in humanity and walked past the puddle, every car that went by while i was passing the puddle went straight for it. Probly becauswe they saw me not crossing the road like the rest of them and thought i was being cheeky, when all i was really doing was givin them a chance to prove themselves. So next time i was in a car with people, we splashed someone. Karma! I think people just can't help it. It turned out to be very funny when i got soaked. |

I know what you mean. That happened to me once and if I had had presence of mind back then, I would have picked up a rock and thrown it at their back glass after they passed me.
But in some situations it's either that or hit some other car in traffic.
And to those who say you shouldn't stand by a puddle in the first place, have you ever considered the possibility that there's no other place to go the second you see the car careening toward the puddle? Don't be so stupid and closed minded. |

Drivers as a whole aren't inconsiderate, and you should have reported the one that splashed you - it's actually a criminal offence, 'driving without due care & attention'.
Despite my thumbs down, this has juat appeared on the ITN website;

I have just been splashed walking to school with my 2 1/2 year old. The car could have slowed down but no it just carried on going. It is a puddle that always appears when we have rain. The police at the moment aren't interested but i will keep hassling as i was wearing an expensive pair of boots which are now ruined so i want compensation but that is not the point and IT IS NOT FUNNY AND IT CAN BE PREVENTED IF YOU ARE A CAREFUL DRIVER !!!!!!!!!! |

I'm sorry Guys, but the opportunity to splash dirty water over a well dressed
nearby pedestrian is about the best thing that could happen to me while driving on the road :)
So much so, that I had to Google any instances of it happening because I seem to miss out.
I hope lady luck smiles on me one day, and I get someone on their way to a job interview! :D
