Why do People Not Pass You, and Then Get Mad About it?

Almost daily, I ride my bicycle to school, and on a certain hill, I have to go slow. So I move over to the far right side of the road. I go as far over as I can, but not too far, as there's a ditch I could plummet into. I'm about a foot off the road. Yet every day a car will go real slow behind me and not pass. One time this happened and someone yelled from the car at me when they finally did pass. Is it just bad drivers, or what? Have you ever done that? If so, why?

Well I don't think it's too courteous, it makes me feel rushed. And kinda nervous as I was hit by a car before.

In your place I would try to signal to the car to let them know that you are aware that they are behind you and that you want them to pass. Using your left hand motion them to pass, these drivers don't want to hurt you and obviously are not familiar with the rules of passing a bike.

I read this article awhile ago that stated that them professional a biker appears (by outfit and helmet) the smaller the distance that drivers maintain behind the biker. So consider that also when biking to and from.

he ones slowing down are just probably trying to be courteous.. The ones yelling are obviously having a bad day/life.

To the people passing you, you are no better than a drunk driver or a driver that is going 20 MPH below the speed limit for no apparent reason. They do not know you or what you are about to do. They don't know if you are a competent cyclist or not. The key to your question is that you are going up a hill. They can't see what's coming over the hill from the other direction. Just suppose there is someone on the other side of the hill on a bicycle and someone is passing them also. Then you have two cars meeting head on, on a hill, where neither one should be crossing the center line for any reason.

Anything that holds someone up while they are driving has a tendency to irritate them.

If it is really that big of a deal, maybe you should walk your bike up the hill.

1. They may be rude.

2. In your situation you should not be on a road that is that dangerous.

3. In my opinion bicycles should not be on the road period.

4. They cause too many accidents, its just the facts.
