Why do Street Lights go out when I pass them?

Yes, your headlights are not aimed properly and they shine on the photocell that turns th street lights off at daylight and on at night.

There may be a few reasons. Most lights turn off by a light sensor. Your headlights might be telling the sensor its light out. Some also turn off then there are no cars present and turn on when they are. That would be to save power and to prolong the life of the bulbs.

I live in California and never have had this happen to me.

Perhaps it is a new energy saving concept being implemented in some states. Street lights on sensors...what a concept!

Actually it could be happening for any number of reasons. It could be a coincidence that it's happening to you. There could be something wrong with the light itself, and perhaps should be reported to your power company to be checked. It's a security issue.

Many streetlights have chemicals in them that overheat, it is actually a programmed thing for them to go off when they reach a certain temp and come back on when it cools of. It seems like it happens when you drive by, but it is not because of it.

Newer lights do not do this and eventually they will be replaced with cooler running and higher effeciency lights.

that does happen to me sometimes too.
i have heard that alot of street lights are motion sensed if they aren't on real busy roads. So that's why it goes out just after you pass them. Still it's a little freaky.
