The main reason for this is called "whip lash". Whip lash occurs when a vehicle strikes another from behind. The reason why head and neck injuries occur from a car striking from behind is because the force from the car causes the head and neck to go forward. Once the head and neck go forward the impact of the crash causes the neck to then go backwards hitting the head rest. This is one reason why manufacturers have started making more vehicles with softer head rests. This is because if a car strikes you from behind and your head hits a plastic head rest, then you risk the chance of a broken neck, skull fracture, spinal injury, etc. My whole point is that the impact from behind causes the person's neck to go forward causing head and neck injuries. |

Whiplash. Your neck snaps back. That is why the head rest should be adjusted to help stop this from happening. |

with the impact of the vehicle, from front or back, it has the tendency to snap the head forward or back, plus, a persons resistance,trying to hold the neck stiff, doesn't help,being strapped in holds you from going threw the windshield but, doesn't hold your neck from resisting the crash ! which in turn causes most neck injuries ! |

this is much more common with passengers in the rear seat than those in the front. most rear seats do not have ample headrests, so nothing fights the whiplash from the collision. most front seats have headrests that go all the way up to at least the middle of the back of the head, and that stops the head from falling too far back and getting a neck injury.
and technically, the body moves forward but the head doesn't move backward - it just stays in place. the body moves forward because it is resting against the seat, which is firmly attached to the car, while the head isn't resting on anything, and so it stays in place. |
