Why do cyclists ride on the pavement?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why do cyclists ride on the pavement?

Even on narrow pavements where there is barely room for pedestrians to walk, they whizz by seemingly without a thought for anyone. It always looks like an act of aggression.

Well, I think that the roads are very dangerous and I wouldn't like to manoeuvre round todays traffic. having said that, I think that there should be more cycle lanes and if there arnt any then the cyclists (if they have to ride on pavements) should ride slowly and consider the pedestrians.

Not all of us do. I think some are intimidated by traffic, some drivers can be very inconsiderate.

I thought that it was now illegal to ride your bikes on pavements now as you would receive a fine .

o.k. now the next thing to complain about is going to be what?

Because motorists want to run them over!!! Its safer for them on pavements. They cause more accidents on the road.

In England it is actually illegal to ride on the pavement althougth this is a laregly ignored rule and doesn't seem to be enforced at all. At the same time. when they ride on the road the are equally hazardous as they choose when and where they will be a road user and a pedestrian. They ignore red lights, weave in and out of the traffic and then make a god almighty stink when there is a casualty. There should be proper rules.

It's a shock when wants whizzes silently past you on a narrow pavement.
I don't mind them doing so if the road is hazardous but I wish they would sloww down and use a frickin bell!
That's what they were invented for!

by law, bicycles are to act on roads in the same manner as any other vehicle... this doesn't mean that they actually do. Ideally bikes should *never* be on sidewalks, and cars should yeild to bikes just as bikes and cars both should yeild to pedestrians. Unfortunately that doesn't normally happen, resulting in pissed off cylcists getting hit by cars and pedestrians getting hit by bikes riding where they don't belong.

Cyclists by law are to use the roads and abide the vehicle laws. They are supposed to signal, stop at stop signs and travel the same direction as vehicular traffic. but they don't. Police forces everywhere don't have the resources to control cyclists.

Because when there isn't a separate cycle lane for them they take their lives in their hands riding in the road full of impatient, thoughtless and uncaring car and truck drivers who think a cyclist is a target for road kill.

Oh I so agree. I was out with my 4 year old daughter today and one guy on a Mountain Bike nearly knocked her to the ground. Cyclists are the first to shout and scream when they are not treated equally on the road with cars, but when was the last time you seen a car mount the kerb when the traffic lights where at red?

melas
they are selfish and the police don`t care

Coz their scared of the road ?

if a cyclist hits you on the pavement you can take them to courtand sue them for personal injury.
My local town the police used to deflate the tyres of cyclists who ride on the pavement or inpound them.

I used to ride on th pavement, as its alot safer that riding on a major A road...
Bearing in mind your cycliing your legs off and the car driver is running you off the road as in his opinion you have no rights.
As a cyclist i have been run off the road, cut up and told by car drivers to get out of the f**king way!.

I would continue to ride on the pavement if i rode a cycle, but now days im on a motorbike.

because 90% of the roads are full of potholes and dangerous to ride a bike on. pavements are kept relatively pothole free due to compensation claims

Alex
They ride on the footpath because they are too timid to ride on the road.

When they do ride on the road they are a bigger nuisance then stray dogs were. They think they are a law unto themselves by ignoring traffic lights at junctions and at pedestrian crossings.

They are very inconsiderate even on roads when they jump red lights

The majority of cyclists are brainless idiots, who do NOT care about the safety of others.

I have seen a cyclist on a pavement, who has knocked a pedestrian down and then YELLED abuse at the pedestrian for causing the 'accident', when it was the cyclists falt.

i used to ride on the pavment because it is much safer at times than riding on the road. i do ride on the road whereever i can mostly but if there is lots of traffic and stuff then i ride on the pavment

They feel more safer and is probaly quicker to get to the destination than being stuck on a busy road. I ride of the pavement but I usually am about 3 feet width wise away from people when I overtake them.

I'm in Canada Alberta and if the bike has a larger well than 20 inches it must use the road and all riders under 18 must wear a helmet when i lived in Vancouver b.c. i used to commute on a bike wore big black biker style boot and left my mark on many an inconsiderate motorist's door

cheekyegg
because they are not insured and are a pain in the **** to cars. I wish all cyclists would have consideration for other people on the streets

minty
they are less likely to get knocked down riding on the pavement and also they never have lights on when dark.
my friend got her back broke by a pavement cyclist.
and even when they are on the road the ride side by side and slow everything down and cause havoc.

phillipt27
they are just trying to get excercise....they normally ride on the street in my town (ATL) they are not angry, just determined

It is actually AGAINST THE LAW to ride on the pavement and not on the road. It is also against the law to run traffic lights. If they were sensible, they would also wear a helmet, high visibilty clothing and have lights on their bikes for when it is dark.

The cars in London are too crazy to risk not wearing a helmet. It is just stupid.

Ollie
depends how old the cyclists you've seen are, and if they are wearing a helmet or not. doubt they'll want to cycle without a helmet on a busy road.

Vickezo
coz they have no respect!!!
