Because they are ignorant plebs.
I call it, 'ASDA Syndrome' 'cos that's where most of them seem to congregate in my locality. I always reverse into parking spaces, but even then, there seems to be a minority who cannot wait the few seconds it takes me to achieve this, and must 'run the gauntlet' behind my moving vehicle.. :( |

The Highway Code clearly says that if you are reversing you dont have priority (Rule 178), if you dont know that rule how did you get your licence? |

Possibly they don't know. Most people are in a little world of their own.
Having said that, if you are reversing from a parking place it is Your duty by Law to make sure that it is safe, not the pedestrian's. |

It is unsafe to back out of driveway or parking space,, in some areas illegal.. The driving school i retired from taught students to back in.. every year several kids are killed by there own family . ff you need to back out walk around the car first.. Some companies require cones around the car when parking . Hope this helpls. |

Why do you carry on reversing, when you know there are people behind you? |

Yes and that is why I reverse into a parking space instead, so I can just drive out and have a better view. |

lol, yes people do that to me all the time. i have started revving my engine so they jump with fright, cruel i know but it serves them right. DON'T try doing it on the elderly though |

The way your question is worded, you must mean in a supermarket car park, or the like. A car park is not a road, so you do not have priority over pedestrians. Unless, of course, you are Royalty (you didn't say). In which case I apologise.
I agree it can be annoying, but there are many annoying things in life that are nobody's fault. Like when you plan a day out and it rains - it's all part of that rich pageantry we call "life". |

?

You know, I'd love to know the answer to that myself...you'd think they'd see your back-up lights!
If I had to come up with an answer, I'd say it's because of ignorance. |

Oh i know what you mean. on't they realise that the big metal moving thing will hurt them far more than they'll hurt the car! ridiculous and then if you don't stop they look at you like your mental. These people need locking up! |

Yes people are stupid and what's worse is they actually seem to stand there and wait until you start reversing before they start walking behind the car. IDIOTS! |

They may be trying to act badass, they may not care, they maybe daring you to hit them so they can sue you and live an easy life, but mostly its because pedestrians always have the right of way in situations like that, and they use that power against you to piss you off or taunt you. For that brief moment they can control your movement, I guess they get off on it when they get home or something. Just get real close to them when backing out, maybe tap them or something with your car, atleast this way when the police are called, you can say that they were clear, they just backed up into your car on purpose.
This kind of stuff is normal for con artist and you can use it against the stubborn and inconsiderate people you describe. Just hit them, you will feel better. |

Yes I agree is it just in supermarket car parks,or is it malls and shopping centres ? But they do it in all of them, so if i run them over how can that blame me? i am looking for cars and we have reverse lights for a reason |

It's like the more lights you have flashing, the more sensors you have sounding off, the more idiots are drawn to the back of a reversing car.
The last time it happened was in the Tesco car park. They waited till I was backing out before they decided to cross behind me. Grrrrrr!
I think it has something to do with the 'we can get personal injuries for you - free!' brigade. Get knocked down by a reversing car and you become rich overnight, eh? |

Yes, I have definitely noticed this many times. You can wait to start reversing until there is nobody in sight and as soon as you start moving they appear from all directions trying to get past the rear of your car before you pull out.
I think they are expecting to claim on my insurance. |

Yes they do don't they. They are probably thinking they wish had a car as good as yours, or perhaps they are just plain stupid.
More likely they are tired, wondering what they will have for lunch/dinner and generally are doing pedestrian things that they always do, until they get in the car then they wonder why people still walk behind them when they are reversing.
It is never worth running one down, it takes ages to get the blood off the paintwork. Much easier to humor them and let them live. |

Yeah they just assume that youll stop for them
The must annoying thing is when people walk across the road randomly infront of your car... then look at you asif cars shouldnt be on the road they should be on the path :S |

49% of the human race is of below average intelligence. At least another 30% seem to act like they are. In short, people are stupid. Use the horn. |
