Why do people drive SUV's?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why do people drive SUV's?

not as a whole. but more specifically why do people in city's with no intention of using them for 4 wheel driving. drive them every where? big top heavy gas guzzlers that drive slowly and are basically a wall in the way of vision? why do soccer-mums and the like drive them to the supermarket to get the grocery's. i agree they are safer (for the driver).. because in a head on collision with a normal car the SUV will go through the wind screen and definitely kill the other person while the driver is most likely above the whole incident.. which to me seems selfish. is there any other reasons?

I think people who drive them like to think of their own safety before anyone else's. We discussed this moral issue in one of my classes. The people who drove normal cars were usually middle class, and generally orientated to the good of the people on the road. The rich, white people (mostly the girls in that, the boys drove sports cars) wanted the protection of themselves and only themselves and if the other person wasn't driving a SUV "Screw them for being stupid". They cared little if it meant that another's life would be on their conscience. They would rather be safe and show off that they had money to spend.

They want more space. They prefer them over min vans because of 4 wheel drive in snow. Of course there's soccer moms that drive the kids around in them.

Here we go another post bashing SUV drivers. They drive SUVs because they want to drive SUVs. And everybody complains that they are gaz guzzlers, are you the one paying for that gas? Drive slowly? well that depends on the driver, i see some old people buying corvettes just to show off their money and then driving them at 30 mph in a 40 mph zone. A wall in the way of vision? What do you mean, you cant see anything if you drive behind one? Here is an easy solution, keep a good following distance. Head on collisions? What about garbage trucks? Delivery trucks? Buses? See enough of them in cities? Nobody complains about them being ridiculously unsafe and they are bigger than any SUV. SUVs might be impractical in your opinion, but hey, there is a reason why baskin robins has 31 flavors, different people like different things.

SUV's are a waste of money in urban areas. There is nothing that an SUV can do in a city that cannot be done by more fuel efficient vehicles. Nobody living in a city needs an off road vehicle. But the manufacturers have convinced them that they do because SUV's make them big money for minimal investment. Afterall, what is a SUV? It's a 4 x 4 truck chassis with an enclosed body mounted on it. Very few people that own these things realize that they are driving tarted up pickup trucks. Even the Cadillac Escalade has a GMC 2500 series pickup frame, engine and running gear.

It probably makes them feel more safe to be in a big car..Almost like a kind of predator-prey type of thing..if they get into an accident, they probably feel they're more likely to survive if their in a huge killing machine. That's my guess.

SUVs aren't safer. Their size, instability, and the majority of driver's inability to drive one safely, leads to more accidents happening.

As to why they are driven by city folk, I would guess as a status symbol, many times. Sometimes people want one for towing (boat, camper, etc).

As for me, I drive a 1986 GM CUCV (military Chevy Blazer). I got it because I live in a rural area, and 4x4 is handy (especially right now here in SE Missouri, we just got a nasty ice storm). Also, it's a diesel, and I plan on making biodiesel for it. Not many American cars have diesel engines.

Many of my customers drive them because they use them for business from realtors to contractors...they need to make a living and a smaller vehicle just wont cut it.

maybe because they might need the room, with kids you sometimes have to take a lot of stuff and maybe they don't want a minivan, if you want to ask something ask why people buy hummers or other 4x4s or trucks just to "pimp" them out with 24 inch rims and systems when they won't ever go in 4x4, thats way more stupid than why your askin about soccer moms driving SUVs, at least the moms use them for taking things

first of all i drive my suv like its suppose to be driven. my big 4.7 v8 might not get good mpg but with a average of 18mpg im pretty happy with that. i drive mine every where even if its just to run down town for something. I dont drive slowly either becasue since i have a v8 i like to use every single horse.
