Why do people drive with no seat belt on and use a mobile at the same time?

Why do people drive with no seat belt on and use a mobile at the same time?

I see it all the time, and passengers as well. Doesn't matter how old they are or what kind of car they drive. I walk more than I drive my car so when crossing junctions I see it all the time. It pisses me off they do this. They are endangering pedestrians and other car passengers as well as themselves.

People don't think. They don't think about the possibilities? The average American is ego centric and is caught up in the moment. Saying that we as a society aren't is denial at it's best.

Being more conscious of our actions would reduce a lot of incidences, heartache, injury, and deaths. Do you realize that if everyone spent a month on a ambulance, a month in an ER, a month in a Pediatric ICU(kids have a more profound affect on people) and see the devastation created because someone didn't take a moment to pull over to talk on the phone, choose one station to listen to, and not eat/drink while they driving; I guarantee things would be so much different.

Those consequences are not part of a person's daily life so they just don't think about it.

Edit:
I have to comment on the statement made by "todvango" about not wearing a seat belt would only harm that person. I ran on 2 car crashes that would dispute your statement. One of which there were 4 people in the car only one was not wearing their seat belt. When the car rolled a number of times; the person not wearing the seat belt killed everyone in the car and that person went to the hospital with some broken bones.
The other crash the driver wasn't wearing a seat belt got ejected 50 ft from the car hit and killed a kid riding a bike. Freak accidents I know and a person probably has a better chance of getting stuck by lighting then it actually happening.

Those are the people who are responsible for accidents and deaths on the road. They are idiots.

Lily
At my children's school there is a Mum who drops her kids off by car every day. At high speed. With no belts. Whilst on the phone. AND the kids don't have the (required by law) booster seats.
She irritates the living sh*t out of me.

BOBO
There are people who see seat belt usage as a PERSONAL choice & not to be mandated by government decree, as using a seat belt offers NO protection to other people. It's your choice! As far as talking on a cell phone, there are earphones/mouth pices that can now be used so that BOTH hands can be used for control of the vehicle.

I know what you mean and its probably because they are selfish and think that an accident would never happen to them. Why would you NOT where a seatbelt? Why stop at leaving your seatbelt undone, why not do us all a favour and leave your door open as well, lol!!

Because they have no idea what can happen in a crash, and also they think it will never happen to them. You see it everywhere. Where I drop my kids off, there was a mother the other day, who was pulled over by the cops. She was busted for speeding, talking on her phone, and she had no seatbelt, and had her two daughters unrestrained. One was jumping on the frontseat, and the other was standing between the frontseats, and to top it off, she was smoking at the time as well. People never learn. Imagine what would happen if she crashed as she was distracted whilst trying to light her Marlboro Light Menthol and talking on her phone. The kids would go straight through the windscreen, as would she as well. What a waste of life. I hope she has those kids taken off her before something happens. But she is not alone, as I see plently of cars with unrestrained kids and adults, and lots of the drivers of these cars are on the phone alot. I've seen what can happen when you don't buckle up yourself or kids. My friend and her baby daughter went through the windscreen. The baby was decapitated, and died, and my friend was seriously injured. Another passenger, next to me in the back, wasn't restrained and almost died from being slammed against the frontseat. I've worked as a nurse, and seen what happens to people when they or others dont restrain themselves. It's something that people who don't restrain themselves or kids should see what it looks like when a mother holds a child on her lap and they're in a crash. Not pretty

Well, you are really talking about two different things.

First, let's look at the seat belt issue. I really don't see how the decision to wear or not to wear a seatbelt effects anyone other than that driver short of them becoming a human projectile, but you could have that with a motorcycle! Personally, I wish they'd had a little more self respect for their own lives, but it is their choice.

Now the cell phone on the other hand could be an issue, depending on the driver, and I hear you screaming, the non-seat-belt wearing, cell phone in one hand, drink in the other, driving with a wrist on the wheel or 2 knees in rush hour traffic is a risk to themselves and other drivers on the road.

However, just as there are bad drivers on the road, there are bad drivers who use cell phones. It doesn't mean the cell phone is the problem. Their bad driving is the problem. Some people can't handle walking and chewing gum at the same time. Likewise, some people can't handle a cell phone and driving at the same time.

EDIT: Colour3 makes an interesting point about hurting other in the vehicle should it roll. Of couse ANY unsecured object in a vehicle can be an issue then! Imagine a thermos, lunchpail, or something of the like!? Yikes!

BTW, Catriona, Congrats on making level 3!

I could give lots of reasons why people do this, for example we all live a 24/7 life and some times people forget or some people think they can live forever and not worry about things like this. But I won't the long and short of it is that they are SMEG HEADS and should not be allowed to drive a bike never mind a car.

they think that they can get away with it, some think they look cool that way, some forget to put seat belts on, some just dont feel like it, and some are just being stupid and want to die. need any other reasons?

Drake
They are morons. Anyone who owns a dog should know why you wear a seat belt. Even if you break a little hard you will get tossed forward. They should start revoking liscences for people who do not buckle up and gab on the phone while driving.

Emmarose
They should watch the programme that was on BBC1 tonight about accidents. It chilled the blood. It makes you realise that we are a heart beat away from an accident whilst driving.

The simple answer is: They won't learn and have the mentality.

It (an accident) won't happen to me!

You only pray that when it does the cost of the lesson is not too high!
