Tailgaiters make me sick more than any other type of bad driver. They are selfish for one thing and they are bullies.

My advice is to stay at the speed kimit and let them stew in their own juices. Don't let yourself be intimidated by them!

People tailgate me on the freeway one time and one time only, because the minute they do, I pull the emergency brake and dump about five miles per hour. When the gap in front of them vanishes but they don't see any brake lights, it scares the shiit out of them and they slam their brakes on. No matter how much testosterone is coursing through their veins, they know deep down in their hearts that if they rear-end me I will own them and all that is theirs. I've seen people behind me swerve into the shoulder because they panicked so much. Two things happen after that. First, once their heart rate slows down, they stay at least half a dozen car lengths behind me for as long as they're back there. In fact, they don't get near me. There is the occasional brain donor that takes twice to learn, but never does it take more than that. Second, if it's a guy driving and a woman riding, I watch in the mirror as the woman gives the man no end of shiit as a result of him trying to be macho in front of her. You may think I'm nuts, but I can assure you that I do this at least once every single day and it works every single time. It makes my drive much more relaxing when there's not some alpha male wannabe or PMS-infected woman trying to play tag on my azz. And don't think it's because I drive too slow. I don't. Go ahead and tailgate me if you like. Test me. I have a silver Dodge Neon and I drive it a lot on southern California freeways.

Good question. I think the main reason is to show the driver in front of them they want them to pull over and let them by. They could actually have some medical emergency and don't want to take the time to dial 911 or have no health insurance or ability to pay for an ambulance ride.

I'll go with the moron, alpha male, and the entitled theory. And no, drafting is not an excuse and neither is medical emergency. Tailgating is actually against the law and I'm not taling about letting someone, who is alone hogging the passing lane, know that you want to pass. The BEST reason is, it is unsafe, dangerous, and really downright mean to the driver being tailgated. It once, long ago was a no brainer that you drove one car length behind, for evey ten miles per hour. Now it's one half a car length per seventy. Courtesy in driving has changed, it's disappeared.
