Why do people insist on walking on the right?

Why do people insist on walking on the right when it means they have their backs towards oncoming traffic, on most roads in the UK, when walking near to the kerb?

R.E.M.E.
They should walk on the side facing the oncomig traffic, so they can see it and get out of the way.

It's generally the men that walks on the right when with his lady and harks back to the times when men carried swords. They were carried on the left so his right hand was free to draw it if he had too.

There's a military standard for men to walk on the right hand side of women, in case a superior is sighted and the man needs to salute (saluting is done with the right hand). The same can be said for anyone enlisted who is walking with someone who isn't.

Traditionally, men walked nearest the kerb, and the woman away from the kerb. This was so the man could protect the woman from being splashed by a passing carriage.

Why does it matter - people in cars should be driving on the road, its only about 25 foot wide. If you can't manage it maybe STOP!!!! OR GET SOME GLASSES... lol.

I walk on the right and sometimes I walk on the left hand side of the road! it depends on what side of the road the place I need to is!!

To keep away from gateways, in case they bump into someone coming out. Also, a protection thing; to put distance between yourself and anyone who might be lurking in those dark gardens on your left, waiting to jump out at you!

Ian
Safety and common sense dictates you walk facing oncoming traffic.

Check the highway code, walking towards oncoming traffic, eg, the right in uk is safest where no paths are, as drivers can see you as they approach

It's just instinct.
