I started riding motorcycles when I was 6 years old, (mini bikes). had one accident when I was about 9 that had I not been wearing a helmet it would have split my skull wide open. Had another accident when I was about 21 that had I been wearing a helmet it would have broke my neck.
Why is that the news never reports that a motorcyclist that dies in a accident was wearing a helmet, yet if one that was not wearing a helmet dies that is one of the first things they report? Why is that they fail to report that the majority of wrecks where a motorcyclists is killed is caused by someone in a cage that "didn't see him".
There are times when I wear a helmet and times when I don't. I do not need anyone to tell me I have to wear one. I know what risks are involved and how to reduce those risks. |

For the same reason people drive automobiles without a seatbelt. We know it isn't safe but no one likes to be told you have to do something.
Personally I don't wear my seat belt because I don't like the government telling me I have to do something without good reason. I can come up with instances where I have seen seat belts hurt and kill people. It is a calculated risk.
On the highway 55 miles an hour or above I wear a helmet.
In town I do not. I can see and hear better without the helmet.
Back in the 70s I had two good friends die in a motorcycle accident. One didn't have a mark on her but died from the whiplash from the weight of the helmet.
Also here in Florida there is a lot of heat so sometimes I take the risk.
If you ride a motorcycle than you know, if not than you can only talk from what you do know |

The main reason I don't were a helmet is I figure if I hit the ground head first going lets say 60 their is 80 percent chance that i am going to be dead, 20 percent that I will be paralyzed for life if I manage to survive regardless of weather I am wearing a helmet or not. weighing about 230, the 80 percent will almost definitely rise to 100 percent, I personally would pick death over never being able to move again. Its a risk that we take and a price that I will pay someday. The price of life for everyone someday will be death. While driving a car you could be injured or killed because of your own or another persons mistake. If your scared of this risk you shouldn't be out there in the first place regardless of being on a motorcycle or a car.
Humans are like oil and water we will never mix properly because we all have different skills, thoughts, potential |

Many reasons. The number one being "Right to choose".
There are times of my own choosing when I wear one. There are times when I don't. There are factors taken into consideration that many of you would never realize. The main reason for wearing a helmet where I live has nothing to do with the way I ride, or my actions. The choice to wear one has everything to do with other vehicle drivers and the conditions caused by them.
Did you know that car accidents cause more head injuries than motorcycle accidents? Would you (like it or not) wear a helmet in your car if the majority of people made it law?
Pehaps eveyone who walks anywhere should be required to wear safety toe shoes? You might stub your toe and fall down the stairs. Happens all the time.
Laws are meant for the protection of the public from individuals. Helmet laws are the opposite, and they certainly don't protect me from the public. |

A helmet can be a bad or good thing. Each person has to make their own decision of which dilemma they are going to use. A helmet, properly designed and fit, will give you protection in a variety of accidents, in a variety of speeds. But a helmet will cause your head to be heavier, can catch on a groove in the pavement, and be a limitation to visibility. The same is true for leather apperal for skin safety. In low speed colisions, the good and bad are almost a wash(15 mph or so). In high speed wrecks, they will almost always save a life, because the human head will collapse very easily. The law here is that you have to wear a brain bucket, but the use of a helmet is not very well defined. You don't have to tie it, it dose not have to meet stringent design standards, and it needs no after sale non-modification rules. If you paint a helmet, have an accident, or load it with stickers, it very much lessens it's protection. The best is snell, but cost prohibitive. The worst are 1/4 helmets, which you might as well be wearing a bandanna. They are each just as legal. |

They do it because they want to. The "law" has no business forcing helmets on riders, either. Since you don't ride, you should tend to the laws governing cage operation and quit worrying about riders. |

I think it is because they like the feel of the wind blowing in their hair. Also, it seems to give them that sense of freedom that wearing a helmet does not give. |

Some people have minds of their own and they make their own decisions. No matter the law in your state you have a right to wear a helmet or seat belt as you choose. Equally true you also have a God given right to choose not to wear a helmet or seat belt regardless of the law in your state. The helmet and seat belt laws are unconstitutional; both laws are equivalent to force servitude.
If you support helmet laws would you also support food laws based on the same reasoning that brought us helmet laws? |

Have you heard of Dar wins' theory of natural selection? Basically it states animals evolve buy survival (ie Giraffe the longer neck, the more likely you are to eat and survive to reproduce and pass on that gene)
The no helmet thing is just another way to get the not so smart ones off our planet. |

There are some people, especially young people, and hollywood people, who think nothing bad will ever happen to them, so they do not need to take precautions against anything ever going wrong.
Some people have the good fortune to never have experienced anything bad, until the first bad thing happens to them, so they fail to heed the advice of people with more experience in what can go wrong.
There are people for whom their personal freedom, such as not having to wear a helmet, seat belts, or whatever, is more important to them than any rules that you supposed to do such things. |

in some states you dont need a helmet. its more fun and you look cool. |

I think its that freedom thing w/motorcycle people. The whole thing about the bike for them is feeling free while riding it. They don't like the helmets because then they cant feel the wind whipping through their hair. That must feel better than smashing your head to pieces if you get in an accident. |

For some strange reason, some people think their head hitting pavement at 60 mph will somehow produce better results than a watermelon hitting the pavement at the same speed. No doubt they are using the same brain power as the watermelon. |

I'd have to say stupidity. The law says you have to wear you seatbelt, so why don't they make a law for motorcycles that says you have to wear a helmet. It's along the same lines as the seatbelt. |
