Why do people rubberneck?

Why do people rubberneck when they see an accident? What is it that makes us want to look but not want enough to get out and help?

I know some people do get out and help... but what do you think is going through the minds of people who just rubberneck?

People rubberneck because they are, by definition, ignorant and don't know or simply don't care that they are jeopardizing the safety of the people in front of, beside, or behind them while they get a good look at what is happening. When they are not paying attention to the road in front of them, they may rear-end a vehicle in front of them or hit an emergency worker. They may wander into someones lane beside them. They are causing traffic to slow significantly or stop behind them, needlessly, mind you, which may cause additional accidents. Finally, it is also a self-centered act, as they are making people behind them wait as long as, or longer than they had to wait to get past the scene of the incident. Not everybody rubbernecks, some people do realize its dangers, that it is selfish behavior, and they avoid it. Those are the ones who take their driving seriously and don't indulge in other people's misfortunes.

People are curious when it comes to blood/gore and death. It's human nature...although it has killed MANY Firefighters, Medics and Law Enforcement Officers, (people not watching the road) rubber necking is just a way of life.

Remember the kids at the front of the class when you were at school and the teacher told you off? Well the kids at the front going "uhh ohhh" were the rubberneckers of the future.
