Why do people speed on the roads?

First of all, I want everyone to know who is reading this to know that I do not want to be flamed or verbally abused. I'm going to ask a question and I want positive feedback here. I want an answer that will be very clear to what I'm asking:

I've been driving on the road since 2005 and I'm 21 now. Everywhere I go, people seem to disobey the speed limit. Even if I go 70 mph at the maximum, I swear that people are going 85 or 90.

There was this one guy on my way back home, I think he was pushing 100 mph +. I moved out of the way for him and he looked back at me like I wasn't going fast enough.

What is wrong with this people? Why can't everyone just take it easy and take their time. Everyone is in SUCH A BIG HURRY. _-_

The speed limits are archaic and much too low...that's why.The 70mph limit was set in the 1960s when cars such as Ford Anglias, Morris 1000s etc, which had a top speed of 90mph and took a long time to stop, were the norm. Nowadays even small family cars can do at least 110mph and can stop in half the time/distance that the old bangers could. What is the motorway limit today???STILL 70mph!!!...Why?
As you've said 80%+ of motorway drivers exceed the limit...why?...do they have a death wish? do they want to crash?...no, of course not....they just know that 80-90 is a safe speed to travel on an uncrowded, dry motorway. Some say that they oppose raising the limit to, say, 90mph as you'd then get people driving at 120. This would not be true (except for a tiny minority) as people tend to drive at their 'comfort speed'.
They should raise the limit and de-criminalise the thousands of motorists who drive at 80-90mph SAFELY every day.
No-one wants to crash.

I feel the same, and I must say, it's a relief to read that it's not just where I live that this happens. I get abused that way with looks too, and other intimidation techniques, everyday.
It's a relief to know that I'm not the last remaining sensible driver on the planet also.

People think they know how to drive. I have been a professional driver for 28 years. and still learning.The speed limits are there to protect us . But people don't care any more. They want to push the limit. It started When cops first started using radar guns. They were not as accurate as they are today. So it became policy to let people go at five or ten over. Then people took it as their right to speed. What people don't understand anymore is driving is a privilege ,not a right.

maybe its not the fact that they are in a hurry... but going fast is fun... not always safe... but fun... try it sometime
