Why do people still have car alarms?

I was talking with my mother one day about this after we heard an alarm go off for like an hour (okay maybe an exaggeration). And we wondered..why do people still have car alarms? No one ever calls the police or anything when they go off. If you have one, you almost always just go "well that can't be mine" or something. I have actually known people, been sitting with them, as their alarm went off and they still ignored it. You just sit there rolling your eyes and go "damnit when is that thing gunna stop??". At least, they do in my city. I know, im one of them, but just out of curiosity... ;)

I can understand your cynicism with car alarms because at times they can be a nuisance rather than a help. But you must realize, the purpose of a car alarm is to alert the owner of the vehicle of any impending danger or if their car happens to be moved by an external force. Car alarms have saved countless lives and have deterred criminals from breaking and entering or from completing their objective which is to steal or harm a life. It is up to the individual whether or not they take the sound of a car alarm seriously. But it is a serious matter if your car is the object of a theft. So really I count that as a blessing that was made for one purpose and that was to deter thefts. As soon as a thief hears the sound of an alarm they usually take off running. That is the point of it, to scare them away and to alert the owner of any danger.

well a good installed alarm can be a good thing. however a bad one can be a nuance.. i have one in my s-10 but it has a pager unit with 360 degree night-vision motion cameras .. I get a head start on most everything being mine will page me and send pictures to my cell phone . I know what it going on before they do. so i know if i need to bring my gun. I have zero torrance for thieves. I have several awards for putting together some of the best alarm systems when i installed them.

A lot of them think it really impresses others when they get out of their car and hit the button to make it chirp. A expensive alarm on a car with a $10k stereo on $200 junk Cadillac. I am not impressed.

People who own car alarms own them because they are under the belief that it will decrease the likelihood of car theft they are wrong.

The vast majority of car alarm soundings are false alarms, and therefore a waste.

When you get down to it, car alarms actually cause more car thefts than they deter, making them not only non-useful, but in fact hazardous to society as a whole, both on an economic and psychological level.
