Why do people street race rather than track race in a safe environment?

At a track, you have complete piece of mind, there's paramedic's sitting at the end of the track, the track is a smooth, prepared racing surface. Some nights the grandstand's are full so that adds to the thrill too. Plus you can bring your family and maybe win a trophy/cash.
Plus what's the future in street racing really? they know they are never going to be a nascar or formula 1 driver street racing, they are just going to be despised for endanger other people's life on the streets.

Because people are, by nature, stupid. They do not consider the consequences of their actions. Unfortunately, they normally do not just kill themselves. They normally take some poor sob with them.

I agree with all of the answers already listed and I have one of my own: the thrill of racing on a City street beats racing on a race track; not to mention the possibility of getting chased by the police.

In NYC, there are a number of roads that; probably not by intention, are perfect 1/4 mile stretches. This is what street drag racers look for, as it gives them a definitive "finish" line.

Also, these young men AND women like to test there skills against the police by fleeing when they show up.

The States have to come up with stricter penalties for individuals that are caught: either racers or spectators. In NY it's only a Class A Misdemeanor (punishable by up to a year) or an unclassified Misdemeanor (6 months). It's also just a Misdemeanor to Flee from the police.

Where I live, Just a year ago, there was a girl killed because a car that was street racing lost control and slammed head on into her truck...

Another I remember, same thing, maybe 10 years ago, except this time, there were 2 girls and a boy waiting at the bus stop, car lost control, and plowed right thru them.. killing both the girls...

Street racing kills... I don't know why people do it... It makes me sooooo angry when I see people flying thru city streets... There is NO need.. There need to be stricter laws against street racing

People street race first because often it is a spur of the moment thing. as well, there are fewer and fewer tracks available for racing as no one wants to live near a race track.

These reasons donot excuse street racing but you asked why people do it on the street.

You have to pay a track fee to race, and you will not be allowed on the track if your vehicle is not in roadworthy shape or you appear unfit to drive due to drink or drugs.
I occasionally get challenged by boy racers - know what really annoys them?; I drive slowly and ignore them!. They soon get bored.

This "may" slow down because many states are now making this a felony instead of a misdemeanor.....
