Why do people tailgate???

There are many reasons people tailgate, my re-writing what everyone else before me would be redundant. I know for a fact that there are reckless people that I must share the road with. I also know that life throws things at you when you don't expect it. So for my own piece of mind, when I see a driver advancing through traffic gaining on me, if I can I'll change lanes to let them by, and once they've passed I go right back to where I was. No sweat, no problems, no road rage.

I only know what's going on in my car, how do I know the other driver doesn't have a legit reason to be in a hurry? They might have just received a call about an injured loved one or a baby on the way. They ALL can't be ignorant a**holes (though I'll agree with you MOST are). It's not my job to make these people drive safely. That's what the police are for. And I'm DEFINITELY not jeopardizing my health brake-checkin' these nit-wits. This is still a free country, I say let the stupid be stupid and suffer the consequences. I stay out of their way to keep it moving and get back to my family in one piece.

i drive a stick whenever someone does that i let my car roll back and act like im going to hit them they usually stay away after that.

people tailgate because they are impatient when people do that to me I slam on my brakes. it will piss them off but who cares they are idiots i had a guy do that to me i brake checked him and he got out of his car at the light and approached my car and i pepper sprayed him. @sshole.

some people think that if they tailgate you will get out of their way. others think its normal, because no one taught them to drive properly. others are just plain stoopid and rude.

They are so rude, I guess they think it's gonna make you drive faster. Unfortunately, they do not realize, or care that they are placing my kids life at risk, as well as their own. They should be banned!

Tail-gaters should go back to driving school...they are a menice on the roads...especially in bad weather or in tricky traffic situations,

I like many of you just slow down to piss them off. If I am on a 4-lane highway I will get next to another slow car and stay even with them so they cant pass... ITs funny. I guess you can ask the question ... why do people continue to drive drunk? people think they are invincible. I just do not think it is fair that other people who are innocent have to suffer because of this.

Hmmm....Rush hour traffic is for the people who want to go home to get yelled at by their spouse for something they did do, something they didn't do, or something they're going to do wrong. So why do we rush home??? I also drive stick so i feel for ya.

Funny thing is most of the time they have shown bad character to gain a whopping 5 secs. lol

I either just move over or if they are considerably pushy I will, what I call road block them; keeping pace with the car in the lane next to me. After awhile I will take off, and fast. I can be so childish at times.

2. The one being tailgated is being rude (possibly a control freak) driving too slow causing a road blocks keeping time with the car in the lane next to them.

I friggin' hate that and I will ride your arsh if you do it to me. Especially if you create a train of cars all waiting to get past oh important you.

I like to slam my brakes on people that do that, in hopes they hit me, and they get the ticket!

The most obvious reason is that people in general are just incredibly stupid. Just looking at all the comments about brake checking them. It's one of the most dangerous things you can do, you endanger their life, your life, people in oncoming traffic, anyone even in a safe distance behind them that may not be paying attention. And to the person posting about the other person getting a ticket - If you slam on your brakes in front of someone for no reason, you BOTH get tickets if they hit you and everyone's insurance is affected by it. I have no qualms with people driving SLOWER however, but be considerate of OTHER drivers behind them too.

Cause they're cross-eyed! HA! Some people just dont know how to drive. What you do is you drive slowER when theyre close to you tailgaiting and as soon as they get frustrated and try to go around you on the other lane... you step on it! HA! Drive safe!

people tailgate becuase they think they can get somewhere faster and yet they are jsu causin more trouble. usually a couple brake checks will mkae them back up.

Because they want to intemidate you... They think theyre cool doing it. Or maybe yor doing something to make them mad....I only tailgate people who are going way too slow .

It's rude of you to drive so slow that they want to tailgate! Quit talking on the phone, putting on makeup and whatever else you are doing and get your a ss in gear and DRIVE! If you knew what you were doing being on a hill in a stick wouldn't be a problem!!!

because you are going under the speed limit. In texas the law is that slower traffic should remain in the right hand lane. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS you have some idiot towing another car in the LEFT hand lane.... I am guilty of tailgaiting in instances like this too. Sorry, but it is upsetting and rude to go in the express lane 20 miles under the speed limit not obeying traffic laws. These people are just lucky I am not a cop I would nail each and every one of them for impeding traffic. >;)

I find that people will tailgate you even if you are doing better than the speed limit in the right lane. Also I have noticed that when you move over to the next lane they will NOT pass you, hence they are just tailgating to bust them off on you. I don't move over for tailgators anymore.
