Why do people tailgate during snowstorms?

The reason why some people tail-gate during storms is because of the fear of going off the road or losing sight of the road. Some people actually feel safer if they are following behind somebody else and can see their lights. Unfortunately we all know that it isn't safe and that the people who shouldn't be out there driving in it most times are. These are usually the ones with less experience and the ones who shouldn't be on the road. Sometimes we just have to grin and bear it and be the leader of the pack through the storm. It is not adviseable if there is a storm going on to pull over. For one you might not see the side of the road as clear and there may be a sharp embankment. Secondly, there may be others immediately behind the tail-gater who may not see you pull over. A truck, or another car behind a truck who doesn't see you. If they don't you could be hit and seriously injured. It is best to just ride it out, and when you come to a motel, or some other designated safe stopping area then pull over. If they are not fearful and just needed to pass then you have slowed them down enough to keep them alive and on the road up to that point. If they were tailgating you then they will most likely rush off faster after and you can continue on safely. I am a commercial transport driver who travels from Vancouver to Montreal and believe me when the snowsqualls hit it is just a guessing game as to who is in front or behind you. Visibility is not much more than a few feet out front. Anyways hope this helps.

I would try to give them lots of notice and pull over. They must be pretty stupid to drive like this in bad weather. I have 4 wheel drive but that doesn't mean anything when it is icy.

You must live in Minnesota, the state of brainless drivers and as a heads-up ... I see more a--ho-es slowpokes in SUVs & 4wds then anything else. Never pull over unless it is an emergency, stay in your lane and let then go aroung. Never look at them when they pass or you maybe rearing someones lips and or receive the finger.

I myself have from time to time have just taken my foot off the gas-pedal and slowed down to 30 after doing 65 in a 55 zone. Don't like it change lanes, I am already doing 10 over fhead.

They tailgate because they are stupid. 4-wheel drive does not make their cars STOP better in snow than anything else. Drive your car your way -- you know your abilities and your car's abilities. Let them fume, but if you see a safe place to pull over, get 'em off your butt before they bend your bumper.

I'm sure in some cases, letting them pass may be a good idea. I'm sure you can tell when you look at the situation outside.

People that think having AWD or 4wd makes it OK to drive like a moron in bad weather are just that....morons. Having AWD or whatever does not make you stop any faster. I went over a mountain pass about a week ago and saw several vehicles stuck off the road or in the center median. Every one was a 4X4. You should drive at a safe speed that you feel comfortable at but do not block traffic. OH AND Donnie.....We'll see ya' in the ditch. I'll be sure to wave as we go by.

Being from Michigan and now living in Texas where there are even MORE bad drivers on the road simply because of a larger population, I think people assume that they are invincible in their "larger cars" and safety precautions have just gone out the window. I feel the same way you do and it irritates me. It feels like the majority of people out there have forgotten the old rule of leaving some distance between yourself and the car in front of you...every one is out to get to their destinations as quickly as possible, even at the ignorant cost of possibly creating an accident or collision. I especially don't understand why people tailgate when they have plenty of space to move over to the other lane. Society just needs to SLOW DOWN....it's ok if you are 5 minutes late getting to the grocery store or getting home and missing the start of Deal or No Deal....for pete's sake people don't realize that they can cause FATAL accidents that way!!!!

IDIOTS is RIGHT! Total lack of awareness of reality! Tailgating is bad enough, but in a snowstorm? WOW. Personally, I put my blinkers on and drive as safely and slowly as possible-i find there's less tailgating if my hazard lights are blinking----if u can safely pull over, i'd pull over, especially if it's a piece of junk car-cause if they ram ya, they might not have the dough to pay ya---(if it's a Caddy or Lexus, maybe let 'em ram into ya and get a good whiplash/neck/back pain lawyer :-)---**just kidding***safety is #1

bad idea and there is nothing you can do about how others drive. I drive truck and I see about 12-15 accidents a year and all but 3-4 will be suv's. I think they give people a false sense of security.
