Why do people turn left from the right-hand side of the road?

I mean, if there's a wide lane, why sit on the right hand side and turn left from there, thus blocking anyone wishing to turn right? What could possibly be gained?

The road is MINE! How dare you question why I am so stupid and inconsiderate.

A little sarcasm but basically the truth in a lot of cases and in the other cases it seems the person is so inattentive they just don't comprehend what they are doing.
