Why do roads with edge lines and a center line feel wider and safer than those without?

Most of the roads in my area are straight, flat, narrow rural roads with a 55 MPH speed limit. Some have lines, others do not. I find I'm somewhat nervous driving on those without lines, but not at all nervous on the roads WITH lines.
On an unlined road, I tend to drift toward the center ... and when there's an oncoming vehicle I have to move back over to the right. This is not something I do intentionally, I just do it. But it never happens on lined roads.
Also, when there's an oncoming vehicle on an unlined road, it feels as if that vehicle is coming right at me, even though it may be completely on its own side.
Why is this? Is it because of the visual reference of the lines? Or is there really some psychological and safety benefit to having center and edge lines on the roads?

I would think it would be visual and that as long as you are within your boundary, you feel secure. I think also it is a type of psychological image that feeds your brain |

there is a psychological reason to the lines as well as letting you know your space on the road. |

When there are lines on the road, you tend to stay between them. If you don't you could get a ticket. |

There is a real safety benefit. It makes it easier to tell if you are where you belong or not.
You might want to measure the roads. They might really be different widths. It might not be psychological. |
