Why do school buses not have seat belts in them for safety of children?

My grandaughter slipped off the seat in the winter, hit her head on the seat ahead of her as driver was turning, the driver never even knew what happened. if she had been buckled in it would never have happened. This has happened a few times. They do not always tell you until later or I would have reported this driver, because he was going to fast. I think all tax payers should make them accountable when it comes to voting. If every mom and dad protested for this it might happen.

There are a few (very few) buses that have seat belts. And they do help. There was an incident (I think here in NC) a few months ago where a school bus carrying preschool students flipped over and was completely upside down. All of the kids were buckled and were rescued. None of them hurt except for maybe a few bumps and bruises. If that bus did not have seat belts those kids would have been seriously injured or worse.
There should at least be seat belts on buses that carry preschool and elementary school students. Not just for their own safety but so the bus driver can focus more on driving than who is standing up, horse playing or fighting in the back of the bus. |

A school bus holds approximately 60 kids, and there is 1 bus driver...if there is a crash and the bus is in flames, it would be impossible for 1 adult to get that many children out of the bus before they were burned to death or suffocated. One answer would be smaller buses and more of them...or 2-3 adults riding on board, but this would cost the school district more money and raise taxes, which make people irate. I understand your concerns...my son rode the bus too, but I guess it's damned if you do / damned if you don't in this situation |

wow, I didn't know that. Definately seatbelts should be installed, if the kids don't like it? Too bad, its for there own safety. |

its the way the bus is made the seats are close creating a point in wich the child will not go over under and are padded so the child would not take on seareus ingery thats why there are no set belts. ther for if you child was not playing on the bus like every one on the bus he /she would not have gotten hurt. if the driver was driving bad i can agre with the reporting hem/her. most kids dont tell thair parents that thay wher not sitting properly in thr seat.and the driver gets the punishment. we have strict rulls on the busses for every one to sit facing the frount and to sit up and to to sit all the way back. its hard to controll 60 kids at once. so ask your shild why he /she was not following rulles or that acsadent probably would not have happend. i drive a bus.(my typing skills are not great please excuse them)and please tell your child to follow directions on the bus tha can save there life. for kid who dont mind the driver thare are set belts just ask the director they are limeted to the frount of the buss and smaller children |

Several reasons: 1) Often, school buses must place 3 to a seat, and seatbelts would get in the way of that procedure. 2) The cost is prohibitive. 3) The prime rationale I've heard is that if the bus rolled over and caught fire, children couldn't release their seat belts quickly enough. |

There is no law that requires buses to use them and knowing the kids--they wouldn't put them on. |

I agree with you. Goes to show that much of our city/state legislation is more about revenue than about anybody caring about safety. Ticketing auto drivers for not wearing seatbelts brings in a lot of cash for the city, but the city would have to pay a lot of cash to install belts in all the buses. Bunch of hypocrisy. |

I agree with you, when we are driving around and there is someone in the passenger side and we do not have our seat belts on we get ticked for it. So believe that school buses should have seat belts for all school buses. |

Kids do stuff in school buses that make it unneccessary to have seat belts anyway. Trust me. |
