Imagine the effect on your gas mileage if you had to floor the car to get to the speed limit.
And remember, speed limits vary from state to state. Here in Arizona, the max speed limit on some freeways is 75, and a bill failed last year to raise that to 80. Imagine what would happen if it had passed - all the car makers now redesign their cars to achieve 80?
Finally, Americans have always had a fascination with muscle cars, or sporty cars. We don't buy slow cars much. DOn't blame "them", blame us! |

You can have your car modified to not exceed the speed limit
if it really bothers you. Or do it yourself, check your rpms at 70mph and put a restrictor some where. |

The issue can be one of power and acceleration; or power to weight ratio. Consider you are in a tight spot, a car which has better acceleration might keep you alive better, on the other hand you may take more risks. Thus the SPEED issue depends on how responsible the driver is. |

I know it does defeat the point slightly! |

You can still drive faster than the speed limit. You'll get a speeding ticket only if you get caught. Well, these days, the camera will send a ticket to your address automatically. |

Seems perfectly logical to me. Do you think the roads would be safer if all vehicles were limited to the maximum speed limit? I think not. |

For the same reason they sell a bottle of liquor with enough alcohol in it to kill you.
IT'S UP TO YOU TO USE RESTRAINT.
think about that! |

Because SPEED sells.
Cars that have a top speed of 75MPH don't sell.
Business is business. |

I know its stupid, my car has 140 on the clock, I have had a max 110 out of it. But the top speed im only legaly allowed to do is 70 |

I think it's a good question but I think the answer is that if your car was always running at it's maximum speed it would soon wear out. It needs to have that bit extra. But I don't see what the point is of building a road car that is capable of doing, say for instance, 130 m.p.h |

Because they can build them and everyone speeds! |

because if they all built 60 hp little crapper mobiles, they would not sell nearly as many cars.
This is why we have the Hummer, the Bentleys, the Exotics, etc, always offering a little more to get people to look at their car instead of the competition. |

because if my car is faster than yours, then I'm more important than you |
