The simple answer? No one would buy the "safe cars". People want to be able to drive fast, and the market controls almost every decision made by manufacturers.

Some other reasons are that you need the acceleration to be able to safely merge with highway speed traffic, and to safely pass. A car that was restricted to or topped out at 65mph would have such anemic acceleration as to be unsafe in those situations.

y are u complaining bro its more freedom would u like it if they made all the cars slow just so it matched up with the street regulations and **** there are times u can speed without getting caught and there are times when u cant it all depends on how well u know the roads

No one on the planet have I seen go to 120mph in their cars. It's a killer and strictly against the rules of driving. Most places will let you go up to 70mph, but no further. Here in my state (VA) 65 is the limit.

they do this hoping that someone will do it and start bragging about it so it makes more people buy the car they aim it at the younger generation more than anything .

In January 2007 the speed limit on the Stuart Highway in Australia was set at 160kph, that's 100mph. Up to then there was no speed limit.

Until quite recently it was impossible to limit the top speed of a car without adversely affecting it's performance at lower speeds, increasing fuel consumption, decreasing hill climbing ability and acceleration. It is now possible to set an engine management computer to measure road speed, engine RPM etc and limit speed to 30 or 40kph above the speed limits.

Limiting cars to speed limits might actually have an adverse effect on safety as passing a slow car on a two-lane highway would take longer.

Most fatalities and injuries occur at relatively low speed, so there has been little done about limiting top speeds. Those who crash at really high speed usually kill themselves outright and the community does not have to pay for their treatment and rehabilitation. So who cares, really.

Because people like to go fast. If all cars topped out at 75 mph i would move to Deutchland
