So when you get in a high speed police chase you can tell how fast you're going. |

It is as you say 70mph in the UK but you can take your car on the European mainland and go a lot faster, Germany has no speed limit on its autobahns |

It's probably because the cars are sold in different countries. On the autobahn in Germany there is no speed limit. |

The Tank

It sells cars. Some people like to see 140mph on their speedo because it makes them feel good and they think it'll impress passengers. There used to be some cases of a particual variant of a model being capable of high speeds but these days that's mostly not the case.
This is linked to the same thinking that makes people buy alloy wheels and 'sports' trim. They don't make a blind bit of difference to the car's performance but seems to keep the owner (and salesman) happy. |

That is simply the full spectrum of the gauge. Most vehicles never go that fast and i doubt that it encourages speeding. |

Yes it does encourage speeding...but in a way it reduces the population because when the drivers clock 140mph...they will disentegrate. HA HA. |

You can drive any speed on private land...
Also some states have provisional laws...like California, the speed limit isn't concrete on the freeway, you can argue that conditions allowed or required you to speed. And some Freeway's are 80! |

it shows how fast the car can go
i guess it does encourage speeding |

some people like to turn cars into racing cars and it helps them no how fast to go i guess but yea i would think it incourages speeding |

Top speed limit in the US is 75, and the only reason speedometers read that high is marketing. Can your Prius really do 120 MPH, I doubt it. |
|

Mad Jack
 |
For the same reason they make vehicles that go 140 MPH+
Speed and power sells. If any manufacturer sold a car that would only do 70 MPH, no more, I would doubt they would sell very many.
In most modes of transportation you see this. Automotive, Motorcycle, Snowmobile, ATV, Boat, Personal watercraft, they all sell over powered modes of transportation where the only qualification you need is a big enough checkbook. |

Q: Why do speedometers go up to 140 mph when it’s illegal to drive anywhere near that fast?
A: Because that’s how American drivers like them. “I think there’d be a lot of congressmen hanging from light poles if Congress tried to limit a car’s top speed,” says Csaba Csere, editor of Car and Driver magazine. “Knowing a car can reach high speeds is part of the excitement of owning one, even if those speeds remain unexplored.” Fortunately, the political trend is toward higher speed limits, not slower cars. Since 1996, more than 20 states have raised them. |

When the car manufactures purchase parts for there cars they will try to get parts that will fit other model's within there range. As a result you end up with speedometers that go to 140 when the car on a good day will only to 70. This in my opinion does not encourage speeding as it is a mind set issue and not a speedo issue.
As an example how stupid would a person look travelling at 90mph in a 1.4 corsa compared to another person travelling at 70mph in a Ferrari? |

1) to impress potential buyers, just a dummy.
2) to show fastest speed the car can go if no traffic police around or in case they after u, u know whether u can "outrun them..
3) car sold to different countries and standardise the design so safe cost..
cant think of others,, tired..zZ |

if the speedo only had 70 on it then that tells you the car can only go 70 mph. My car has 160 mph on it and I know that it can go 140 mph. So in a way you can tell if its a fast car or not by looking at the speedo. |

LORD, this must be the 3 millionth time this question has been asked. Personally, I say "WHO CARES?" |
|

Lucylu
 |
im sorry but this question is stupid
here we use mph, whereas france etc use kmph!!!which means that 70mph and 140kmph are the top speeds that car can do (just measured in different units!!)(theyre prob about the same speeds anyway)!!
i cant believe how stupid some people who answered this are!! hehexx |

Ya, I'm not sure why speedometers ever go above 100 KM. The highest speed limit I've ever seen was 120 KM. Sorry Americans I don't know the conversions.... get out of the stone age. |
