They may have other reasons such as surveying the road. They may be concerned about their own safety. Would you like only one cone between you and a car going 70 miles an hour? It could also be about properly controlling the traffic before they hit the construction zone. |

My road has been coned for 2 months. I go out at all times of the day but have never seen any work underway. When I arrived home today at 4pm one guy was sitting in the council van watching girls in short skirts. (I live opposite a girls' school)
Shouty dad- your answer is best! |

They do this because they have no where else to store the cones. |

They will often courten roads off for safety reasons, and also to protect their roads. There may be a loose area, or bump. This usually happens when undergoing maintainence, also they may have to cone it off prior to conducting their work, so it is ready and prepared. |

i have often wandered about this...where i live they will close off part of a road, not dig anything up and leave it there for about a week or so, come back and dig up the tiniest bit then leave it, then about a week later they will be back do whatever they were meant to be doing and then fill it in and go... i will never understand it |

the men doing the work don't make these decisions, they are made by management. |

They do this for many other reasons other than working on the road, they may be checking the road or surveying on many other things.. |

i have been wondering this very thing for years ,, have you noticed that where ever there are road works there is a mysterious absence of work men i some times wonder if they are a tribe of underground dwellers who lke to pop up and have a joke by causing traffic problems |

They are waiting for the traffic to slow down to speeds that make it safe to work and finish the job , so that no workmen are injured by motors that skid out of control after tailgating at speed.
The sooner that traffic slows , the quicker the job is done, the sooner the cones go. |
