LOL You must live near Tampa, FL also!!! As a professional truck driver for a materials supplier, I see this day in and day out..... Our pace of life has increased and it seems like people are in a huge rush to hurry up and stop. As far as the fuel consumption, that varies by individual and what they are comfortable in spending on their transportation. I can't exactly say that by phrasing your question in this fashion that you will be able to expect a lot of favorable and sympathetic response. I usually catch and pass these people at the next light as well since I maintain my speed to avoid stopping at each light... ie: if I see the light turn yellow or red, I keep rolling towards it and time my arrival so that I don't completely stop my 75000# semi trailer at every light!!

Actually, you're a bit slow in the mental department. A) the money may not be the most important thing to the speeder, and it may not be a question of 75 vs. 55 so there's a wide range of gas/speed, and B) it's true you might catch them at the next light on that particular occasion, but other times, speeding makes the difference between missing and making a light, if their speeding and your slowing are applied consistently, then over the course of a few days, months, etc, the amount of time they save by speeding can really add up. And of course, if they're not on a secondary road with stoplights and signs, then keeping a constant speed makes a bigger difference.

2) to some people the only goal of driving is getting from point A to point B...to others driving is, in part, a hobby - the joy of performance driving is worth more cash. I paid more money to buy the RSX type-S instead of the base model RSX for a reason - might as well put the extra horsepower to good use.

3) the most efficient speed is 60 mph - doing 75 does not use twice as much gas as 55. I track my keep track of my mileage between each fill up. I can push my car hard and still average 25 mpg - in part because it's a 6spd manual.

4) I'd much rather be surrounded by a bunch of focused speeders than a bunch of people doing the speed limit while chatting on cell phones, eating, or putting on makeup

Reasons to speed:
1) The radio was playing a good fast tempo song & I was driving to the song.
2) My seat was too forward and I was closer to the pedal and didn't realize it. I was applying the same amount of pressure I always do.
3) I never saw a speed limit sign.
4) I'm in a hurry.
5) I was on the cell phone and wasn't paying attention.

I speed.

I never saw any difference in fuel economy between driving normal and speeding.

I don't excessively speed.

I don't tail gate.

I do weave in an out of traffic, but I do it slowly.

I don't speed through neighbourhoods or when pedestrians are around.

I don't hammer on the gas or the brakes just for the hell of it.

But by taking advantage of speeding (like making the next light or shaving time off a long trip) I feel the advantages are worth it. Haven't got a ticket in years. Haven't been in an accident until someone read ended me this summer (that wasn't caused by speeding on my part).

Hmmm.... Let's see. First of all, I see no difference whatsoever in my gas mileage no matter what speed I drive. You do not waste twice as much gas at 75 than you do at 55. So you need to do some more homework on that one. No, I don't like burning money... which is why I own a car that is only a 4-cylinder manual transmission with no options... I have crank windows, manual door locks. My commute to work is around 30 miles one way yet I still only fill up my 12 gallon tank once a week. My insurance is only $53/month for full coverage and my car payment is only $250/month. I don't call that burning money. Pretty thrifty if you ask me. Very slow in the mental department? I don't think so, scooter. Is it dumber to drive with the flow of traffic, which is usually going 5-10 mph over the speed limit, or to drive the speed limit or even slower, hold up people around you, piss them off and cause road rage? Maybe you're the one who's slow in the mental department, as well as the driving department.

Its actually now classified as a medical condition. We like to go fast because they're are idiots like you that cause accidents going 55 in the slow lane.

how many americans actually do go the speed limit??? if the sign on a highway says 55 do you go exactly 55? maybe 1 out of 10 or 20 go the posted speed limit. why should you care if other people are speeding? you should take less time worrying about others and more time worrying about building pyramids king tut....wait yer dead...

Actually, if you want to REALLY drive faster than others, you have to master late-braking. The number of times that "young bloods" shoot past me at 90mph when I'm doing 70mph, and then find that I am right there with them at the next roundabout, never fails to amuse me.

I would never do it dangerously of course, but it is good, harmless fun reeling them in and deflating their egos a little.

Of course, there's another approach to driving.

I had to laugh at the sticker on the back of an American "Hummer" vehicle, which read:-

"How's my driving? If this vehicle is being driven in a dangerous or inconsiderate manner, please telephon 0800-121-3000 -EAT S**T!"

Usually, youngsters love to drive fast and they speed their cars
to get the thrills and excitement to prove their masterly control
of the machine and at the same time the great respect from their friends.
Some of them are quite skillful and safe drivers, while others are real idiots on the road.
No matter what, speed indeed kills. Just take a look at the traffic and accident statistics in any state. It will tell you outright that speed is one of the factors that causes most vehicle accidents.

and that's the thing, the people that are speeding like that from stoplight to stoplight are young teens. they are most likely not paying for their own gas and do not care. plus, most people think that it is cool to go fast for short amounts of time.
