Age bias, plain and simple.

The younger generation think they are you-know-who's gift to the world and want all us "olde phartes" off the road so they can go fast and increase the quality of the gene pool.

Although some of the previous responses about a complete retest every 10 years or so has some merit.

I'm not in my 70's, but I KNEW when it was time for me to hang up the driving gloves. I have never regretted my decision. [Now they tell me that I can have my license reinstated; my vision has improved]. I think I'll pass -- there's too many loose nuts in autos these days. And they're mostly the 16-25 year old nuts behind the steering wheel.

It is not so much a retest but the competence too drive part of the license renewal is a self declaration. This means that drivers with poor eyesight, failing reactions due to arthritis etc can just declare themselves fit to drive even if they are not.I have known people and not just the elderly who need to wear glasses to see distant objects ( more than ten feet away) but refuse to wear glasses while driving because they are not cool.An eye test and physical should be mandatory every ten years for all drivers not just the elderly. And driving should be illegal without a fitness to drive certificate.

Blame the older drivers who DO need their license taken. You used to see them on the National news like once a week. You know the ones who drive in to a Farmer's market, or who drive down a pedestrian street. Young people have problems with driving called INEXPERIENCE. If they don't have a license they will never gain the experience. Although I think there should be a simulation to real driving conditions as part of a test and THEN we'll see who gets a license. Most people will get in simulated wrecks and won't get a license any time too soon.

Most of the 18-25 year olds are definately insane (i'm one of them at the age of 22).

The reason that accidents are caused by them is there are so many more of them on the road so statistically the odds of an accident are higher. Also older drivers don't drive as often and they don't drive drunk.

A retest for a 25 year old doesn't accomplish anything, they know the rules, it's all fresh in their mind so they can easily force themselves to follow the rules for a 20 minute test. Young drivers don't want to follow the rules, it's not that they can't.

A retest for 70 year old is more to see if their reflexes and eyesight are good enough to be driving. It will be easier to see if they can follow the rules. I also think Doctors should be required to notify the DMV if the patient is not in a position to be driving.

I agree with Lauren and I also believe that theey may do this because in 50+ years driving laws change a lot. They simply may need a refreshment. Another reason I think that they do this is because many people 60+ begin to loose their vision or arent able to react quickly enough and are just to proud to admit they shouldnt be driving(nothing against old people, we all have pride)

Most teens have know idea about life and responsibility...all that they are concerned with is getting a drivers license but are still lacking the maturity of truly understanding what 2 tons of steel can do...

i would say younger than 70, and its because they cant drive... ive seen an older person drive over a curb from a parked position through a wall at my local CVS(where i work), they shouldnt be driving. They drive extremely slowly usually and tend to swerve more, im assuming its mostly a vision problem but im unsure, either way its very dangerous. And most accidents are between 18-25 because A. young people are stupid enough to drink and drive and theres more of us on the roads.

I would say that most people over a certain age, heading towards their older years, have a slower reactionary response to their surroundings...creating an unideal driving situation.
