Why don't Groups 2 & 3 car seats in the UK have 5 point harness?
|
In the US I have a great Britax Frontier
http://www.britaxusa.com/products/product_detail.aspx?ID=15
that has a 5 point harness for children up to 80lbs (36.2873896 kg). I want to buy one in the UK for our trips there, but the group 2-3 chairs only have the 5 point harness for kids of 40lb max! Why is this?
From what I hear, Britax USA are discontinuing all their chairs for bigger kids that don't have 5 point harnesses. So why does the same company have different safelty rules in different countires?
Also, in the US most seat belts are locking (your fully retract them and then release at which point the seat belt locks so that the child cannot pull the belt forwards - this is particularly good if your child falls alseep and leans forward, as they are still held in position). Not only do UK (and the rest of Europe?) seat belt not have locks, but the chaisr also do not. In the US, you can buy a "locking clip" that will at least hold the lap part of the belt tight ( even if the shoulder part still moves). Why are these not sold with all UK car seats?

I'm baffled by the differences. I don't feel safe having my 4 yrs old, 43.5lb son in a booster seat only. I really feel that he's safer with a 5 point harness.
Any insight would be great.
Thanks

I can't speak for Britax on the differences between their US and European ranges. Perhaps you should contact them directly.
However, if you will be driving in the UK you must make sure that you comply with UK law with regard to the carriage of your son. The website I've linked to below is probably the most comprehensive and I recommend you read it.
Group 2 and 3 seats are intended to secure the child using the adult seatbelt by positioning them and guiding the belt in such a way that they are properly restrained in the event of an accident. The seatbelt is more than adequately strong to cope with the weight of a child in a seat and all seats must meet United Nations ECE Regulation 44, so they have all been subject to a battery of tests and are designed and constructed to an internationally agreed standard.
Incidentally, I don't understand your description of "locking seatbelts". European cars have an inertia reel system that self-retracts the seatbelt when not in use but also tensions the belt against the occupant when restrained. If you pull too hard on the belt it will lock and not allow any more of the webbing out (and incidentally, you don't have to pull very hard to achieve this).
While I can understand why you think your son would be safer in a 5 point harness, he will be perfectly safe in a European spec booster using the adult seatbelt. |
