Why don't bus companies have to report bus accidents?

I run a safer bus campaign, saferschoolbuses.co.uk, and am amazed that bus companies do not have to report accidents. There are no real statistics in the country and no details, even the press rarely report them.
I have found that in London alone in 2005 there was over 2,600 bus accidents where injuries were reported. However I also know that over 70% of people do not claim for bus injuries (which is how statistics are gained) and that an injury is only a reported injury if a person has an overnight stay in hospital. Therefore a broken arm is not a severe injury.
I also know from experience that bus companies attempt to hide accidents and fix "in house" where they can.
I suggest that in reality, throughout the country, there are some 25,000 plus bus accidents a year.
Does anyone know where details are kept? I ask as I understand that bus companies investigate their own incidents and do not have to report details, which surely is wrong, especially as it is a place of work for the driver.

Ty Tedward, I'm trying to find out where, when and details.
Presently the only information available with details are from the press and only a minute amount of bus accidents are reported.
Bus companies do report to their insurance companies (if they have to and if they do not fix in house) but as far as I know they do not have to provide public information. So how do we know how safe they are? how do we know how many accidents actually happen? how do we know where they happen, when they happen an dhow they happen?

They do report accidents, mainly so they can claim on the insurance (!), but they do report them.
Try contacting bus companies, I know the one near me is 'First' so you could get the contact number for your local bus company.
It's a good thing you're doing by the way, I refuse to step on a bus - ever since some stupid bus driver began driving erratically before I even managed to sit down. The passengers got some free entertainment on that day! |

They do have to report any accidents...for insurance purposes apart from anything else. My ex husband was a bus driver for many years so I know! |

i am a bus driver and can tell you that if a person is injured while travelling on a bus then it must be reported to the police, also if a bus is involved in an accident then this also must be reported in either case they are reported as road traffic accidents so the figures you are looking for will be included in that statistic, however those relating to pcv/psv should be held by your local licensing authority. |
