Why don't planes and cars have shielding to keep cell phones from working?

Since laws that say that you cannot use cell phones when driving and when on a plane are widely disobeyed, why has the government not tried to mandate designing cars and planes with shielding to block cell phone signals?

I don't believe in yakking on the cell phone while driving, but I hae used my cell phone in the car to phone police. I have reported a couple of drunk drivers, a gang of kids riding their bikes all over a highway cutting off cars suddenly, and some people in a truck and snowmobile late at night riding around blaring an emergency type siren and shining bright lights in peoples' windows. Even last night, I used it to report people selling stolen ot counterfeit stero equipment out of the back of a vehicle. So, to me, shielding on the car would be a safety issue. |

The same reason they don't allow cell phones on planes in the first place. Communications. They need certain frequencies open at ALL times, especially for air to ground control. If having a phone on a plane might be bad, imagine what harm having a frequency jammer built into a plane might do. The result could be a catastrophe! |

Fred C has hit it right on the nose. Sometimes there is a need to use a cell phone while driving, and that is to report an emergency. Mindless gabbing is a totally different issue. |

$$$ plain and simple. to design something that technologically advanced would cost way to much, and the majority of it would probably come from taxpayers. |

The shield (a Faraday cage) would resemble that mesh inside the window of your microwave oven... perhaps with even smaller holes.
If you cover your windshield with metal foil with little pin holes in it, you could create a bigger problem with visibility.
It is relatively easy to wiretap (wireless tap?) a cell phone... especially in analog mode... so instead of shielding, if society really wanted to do something, they could legislate and fund cell phone police to confiscate phones used illegally. |

actually they are working in different directions, which is to make it legal to send and receive phone calls on commercial planes soon. and it is legal to use cell phones while driving in most states as long as you are using a hands free device. |
