The vast majority of limits are actually reducing due to the idiotic way in which the government tries to push the speed kills theory as the only answer to road safety.

It was not that long ago (60's I think) that there were no limits on the motorways. The 70 limit was introduced because Jaguar and a couple of other companies used to use the M1 as a high speed test track when it first opened.

As cars become more technologically advanced, they are able to travel at higher speeds in a safer matter. Advancements of parts and other features such as design and testing have pushed the overall safety of cars over the last 100 years.

cars, safety devices, tires, fuel and roads have all improved. fuel has changed in availability as well affecting the way the gov't wants you to consume fuel.

roads and cars may have got safer - but there are still a load of idiots out there that think because they passed a very basic test it qualifies them to be a test pilot of any vehicle with an engine,when all they SHOULD be driving is a KIDDIE CAR
