Why have there been changes to speed limits for cars in the UK over the last hundred years?

The biggest reason for speed limit change has been the change in population. Just like here in the US, speed limits are set based on traffic density, as well as the terrain and profile of the road (urban, suburban or rural, commercial or residential area, number of lanes) - to name a few.

All the best.

Many of the speeds limits are now being lowered (i.e. 20 mph at schools, through towns etc.) due to the increased road traffic and the fact that cars can go much faster now. These decisions are usually made through research. Even 40 years ago the average family car was hard pressed to keep up to 60 mph (compare that with now) so these things do need to be adjusted from time to time. With the introduction of so many speed cameras people are now taking more notice of their driving speed. It used to be common practice to always go about 10 miles faster than the speed limit - now you will get prosecuted, too many points and you lose your licence.

here in the U.S. we changed the speed as the roads became better.
