so you can see it in your rear view mirror when they are behind you. Since most states (if not all) require vehicles to pull over whenever an emergency vehicle is coming towards them, even on the other side of the road, the assumption is that you can see them coming the other way, but it is harder to tell when they come up behind you. Thus the reversed writing. |

Because when you are in a car in front of them..... and you hear the siren, you look out the rear view mirror.
And instead of reading it backwards, you read it regularly. |

It is not actualy backwards. It is mirror imaged so you can read it in your rear view mirror.
U-Haul puts mirror immaged "45MPH" on the front of the fenders on their trailers so that renters can see it in their mirrors, and ignore it. |

Good question! It's so that the driver in the car in the roads can read it in their rear mirror. Mirrors tend to make words look backwords, so writing a word backwords will make it look like a correct word and make it sensible while viewed in a mirror. |

This makes it easier to see in your rear-view mirror. When you're driving, and hear sirens go off and look in your rear-view mirror, you can read AMBULANCE and know you have to pull over and let it pass you.
I hope this helps. |

If you look in rear view mirror, the letters are reversed.
I would hope someone hears the siren and looks around and sees it before it is so close you only see it that way. |
