Why is 'AMBULANCE' written backwards on the front of ambulances?

This may seem like a silly question, but i asked my mom(she's in the medical field) and she does not know either. What is the meaning of having it written backwards?

so you can see it in your rear view mirror when they are behind you. Since most states (if not all) require vehicles to pull over whenever an emergency vehicle is coming towards them, even on the other side of the road, the assumption is that you can see them coming the other way, but it is harder to tell when they come up behind you. Thus the reversed writing.

Because when you are in a car in front of them..... and you hear the siren, you look out the rear view mirror.

And instead of reading it backwards, you read it regularly.

so people who are driving in front of the ambulance can see the ambulance from their left/right mirror.

It is so you car read it properly in your rear view mirrors.

1st Amendment Nut
It is not actualy backwards. It is mirror imaged so you can read it in your rear view mirror.

U-Haul puts mirror immaged "45MPH" on the front of the fenders on their trailers so that renters can see it in their mirrors, and ignore it.

Good question! It's so that the driver in the car in the roads can read it in their rear mirror. Mirrors tend to make words look backwords, so writing a word backwords will make it look like a correct word and make it sensible while viewed in a mirror.

This makes it easier to see in your rear-view mirror. When you're driving, and hear sirens go off and look in your rear-view mirror, you can read AMBULANCE and know you have to pull over and let it pass you.

I hope this helps.

Toki
so people can read it in the rearview mirror (in case the flashing lights and siren didn't clue you in)

so that cars in front can read it :)

Michael
so that if its comming up behind you and you look in your rearview mirror it will say ambulance

If you look in rear view mirror, the letters are reversed.

I would hope someone hears the siren and looks around and sees it before it is so close you only see it that way.

JT B ford man
Its there so if you are on the phone or Ipod or TeX paging when you look in the rear view mirror you can read AMBULANCE Hope this helps.

snickerssatifies
So when you look in your mirror it will be readable and you can get out of their way if they're running hot
