Why is drunk driving illegal?
Find answers to your legal question.

Why is drunk driving illegal?

Most friends of mine drive cautiously after a few drinks, because they don't want to be caught. Would a slightly inebriated requirement reduce traffic accident rates? Are there any studies for this theory?

You have got to be kidding. Any amount of alcohol reduces your reflexes and your ability to operate a motor vehicle. Your friends drive cautiously because they don't want to be caught. If you took the fear of being caught away, they will no longer be careful.

Bunches of studies. That is why it is illegal. Actually, changing any driving habits, is a clue to a cop that your drunk. I used to be a law enforcement specialist in the Air Force, as well as in a city in Florida, and a deputy sheriff in Texas. There is a formula that was conducted 20-30 years ago, with probabilities. For example. When a car is being driven at night, without the headlights on, the chances that the driver is drunk, is 30%. Stopping at a stop sign and waiting for more than one minute, and that driver is drunk 40% of the time. Not stopping at all and the driver is drunk 35% of the time. Based on these and about another 20 or 30 items, a cop can make a pretty good guess, that if a person does 2 or 3 or 4 of these things, the percentage goes way up.

its very dangerous

Studies show that people who have alcohol in their system have slower reaction times than when they do not. Therefore, it takes a longer period of time for your brain to react to stimuli when driving (such as seeing brake lights in front of you, a yellow light turning to red, or another car changing lanes).

You and your friends may THINK you're driving more cautiously, but in reality, you're impairing yourself.

AAA has a great driving simulator they take around to high schools. The driving simulator responds slower than normal to simulate what occurs when you drive under the influence.

Although you and your friends drive carefully after drinking, there are many people who do not or they believe that they have the ability to, but really do not. So many people have died, especially in college towns. Look up the number of accidents in Austin, Texas. I think it's all about safety. Drunk drivers have killed many people and themselves.

here is a study. drink some beers and then try to walk in a straight line. then imagine that you are in a car. do you really think that you should be driving if you cannot walk in a straight line...something that you have been doing since before you can even remember.

Because there was such a public outcry back in the 1970's and people were and still are dying needlessly to this day. There's nothing wrong with have a few beers, maybe not even doing that while driving. The issue is that the law can't determine who is and who isn't fit to drive with how many drinks. This is why no one has a right to drive while intoxicated, and the arresting officer has heard every excuse in the book. It also doesn't matter to the family members that the police have had to visit because someone got killed by a drunk driver. Alcohol will never make you a better, it'll only make you less ashamed of your mistakes. Considering the lack of shame these days, there won't be a shortage of arrests, injuries or deaths.

Yes! There are several studies done on this. Various factors affect how much even one drink can affect someone, such as weight and tolerance levels. If you ever watch Mythbusters, they did an episode which showed Adam and one of the Mythterns drinking and then driving, while still under the legal limit, but having right up to the legal limit...they did the test without alcohol, while on a cell phone, and then after drinking. It greatly affected their response times! If you get a chance, watch it. Also, places like the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy have regular civilians come out and drink, then drive, to demonstrate to their cadets the affects of alcohol.

You can't be serious. If I knew you, I would give you a nice hard, open handed SLAP to the side of your head. Both of your parents need one also for raising you. Get your head out of your ***. I'm sure lots of us have driven with a slight buzz. Driving cautiously is a good idea to come home alive and not hurt anyone else. ALL of the studies show that alcohol affects driving ability. "would a slightly inebriated requirement reduce traffic accident rates"? Yes, ALLOWING slightly inebriated people drive around with a nice vodka buzz will help to solve accidents and fatalities. You tard... I hope this was a joke because it scares me that you are amongst us. At lease "most" of your friends drive cautiously after a few drinks; take a ride home from these friends, not the rest who don't drive cautiously.

Because it impairs your abilities and reaction time. I know lots of people who do it and don't get caught. I on the other hand have been caught. I blew .07 which is under the limit, so it is not a DUI, driving under the influence, it was a DWI driving while impaired, I did not know the difference back then and plead to a DUI, one of my biggest regrets, but I do not think twice about getting behind the wheel of a car, after I have been drinking. I would much rather be safe than sorry, and could not live with the regrets if I was to injure or kill someone else, because of my actions. I was pulled over at almost 6:00 am, I had stopped drinking at about 11:00 pm the night before, I thought I was okay, but, I have learned my lesson.

Why do you think? Look at the statistics! Surely you don't really have to ask.

because drunks usually live in the accidents and the innocent die. it wouldn't have become a problem if it didn't cause vehicle crashes. it causes people to lose their lives & property

It is illegal because the reaction time of an intoxicated person is too slow to operate a 2-ton lethal weapon safely. But go ahead and justify it any way you like, just stay out of my neighborhood.

Aren't you the guy who also wanted to know if driving 100MPH would get you to your destination quicker, resulting in less gas being used???

it is a huge money maker for the state. I had to take my friend to court because he could not drive they fined a mexican 500 dollars and charged my friend 2500 for the same crime. We were told later that they can't track the mexicans so they cannot charge them more. the mexican did no comunity service or dui school

dk
Its because they and you are a danger to yourself and others.

I agree that it should be lower than what it is. If you're very slightly intoxicated you will be more careful because you don't want to get caught. However, I think that the reason it's illegal is because sometimes when I drink I get a little tipsy after drinking initially and everything hits me and I'm completely drunk. It would be bad if that happened to someone while they were driving. That's the reasoning behind the law, but they should bring up the amount you're allowed in your blood stream by a little bit more than it's at already. Unlike everyone else, I actually read your question and realize your not asking why you can drive when your smashed, your asking why you can't drive home after a couple of social beers, which is a perfectly reasonable, logical question.
