Why is it discouraged to drive with both feet?
|
I want to know if it is more dangerous than driving with only one foot. My friend drives with both and when I tell him it's a bad habit he asks why and I really don't know. Is it really that bad? And if so, how?
I'm from Illinois if it helps wih legal issues about driving.

In a panic situation you'll hit BOTH the brake and the gas. It's just about guaranteed, no matter WHAT your friend thinks he'll do. |

1. Your have a tendancy to rest your foot on the pedal so your brake lights are on all the time and people will not be able to determine when you are actually "on" the brakes.
2. By resting foot on pedal you will be slightly dragging the brakes most of the time, leading to premature brake wear. |

Because when you use both feet, you can be riding the brake and not know it.
Your brake lights will always be on. People behind you will not know when you are really braking.
If too much pressure is on the brake, you will heat up your brakes. They could fade just when you really need them. The excessive heat could cause the rotors and / or drums to warp. causing a pulsing brake pedal.
You will also be continuously replacing brake pads.
As far as it being illegal. How on earth would someone ever know which foot you have on a pedal. It also could never be proved. |

If you need to stop quickly it is best to only have one foot. Your intincts may have you push both feet and you won't have time to think about it. Try slamming your foot on the brake and the gas at the same and you may end up not stopping immediately. |

im in IL also
i am unsure about legalities with this
but most ppl are not talented at doing two things at once with two different limbs
a very small percentage of ppl are
and since most ppl are not talented at this i believe this is why it would be or is discouraged
IMHO |

If it's an Auto, yes. Not just dangerous, you'll spoil the transmission faster as well...
If you're driving manual, there is NO way you can drive with only 1 foot unless you're doing the automated clutch system (only available in certain countries, where the system recognises and pushes or releases the clutch pedal for you). |

It is dangerous you could panic and shove both feet down on both the gas pedal and brake. |

1. It's bad for the brakes, as you will be riding them, and the brake lights will be on all the time.
2. If the car in question uses it's brake lights as rear indicators (blinkers), they will be hidden as the brake lights are on all the time.
3. In an emergency, the natural reaction is to stomp both feet down. If you drive with one foot for the throttle and brake, you will go for the brake as a learnt instinctive reaction. If you drive with one foot on the throttle and the other on the brake, you will hit both and accelerate into whatever it was you were braking for. |

1. you can get confused driving this way and make a mistake.
2. i have some of my customers that do this and they ruin their brakes alot quicker by doing this. |

Assuming your talking about automatics, yes driving with 2 feet would be abit pointless your either going to want to speed up, maintain speed or slow down they only require one foot each so why get the other foot involved?
If he finds it easier then sure, but it I suppose does make a difference if he was riding the brake or didn't depress the accelerater fully before braking, but each to his own... |
