Why is it not safe to use acetylene above 15psig?

ajthe41
Acetylene gas will explode under pressures above 15 PSI. There are no cuttng operations that require higher pressures, just more volume flow. Most hand held torches will do best at 5 PSI.

LeAnne
Acetylene gas is an unstable gas. In the tank at higher pressures, it is stabilized by being dissolved in acetone in a liquid state.

"Pure acetylene under pressure in excess of about 15 pounds per square inch or in liquid or solid form explodes with extreme violence."
