Why is it so important to restrain people in a collision in a car?

the average-person physics behind it:

if you are 200 lbs, and traveling 35 mph, and you hit a tree dead on, you are now (200lbs @ 35 mph) 7000 POUNDS worth of force flying through the air. a seat belt restraining you to the car lowers this amount of force tremendously, making it safer for everyone. this applies to people in the backseat just as much - the person in the passenger seat surely doesn't want a 7000 pound mass hitting them from behind.

More often than not, statistics prove that you are far safer in the car during a crash than you are if you are ejected from the vehicle - this is especially true with air bag equipped vehicles.

heres a easy test you can do yourself to know really what and why have any firend drive you a round and slam on the brakes and as your head bounces off dash remember that feeling then have same friend drive some more but this time wear seat belt and then you wil lsee and feel it reason for it less bouncing come on really it keeps you from flying about the car and breaking things

In addition to the first answer, you have better control of the vehicle if you can remain in your seat and your passengers don't fall on top of you.

Imagine running as fast as you can - into a wall. You'd expect to get pretty banged up.

Do you think you could stop yourself if the wall suddenly loomed up when you were two feet away from it?

This is exactly the situation you face when the front of your car hits something at only 15 miles an hour.

The car stops in the first tenth of a second, but you keep on at the same rate you were going in the car until something stops you - the steering wheel, dashboard or windshield - if you're not wearing your safety belt..

Bad enough at 15 miles an hour, but a 30 miles you hit "the wall" four times as hard as you would at 15. Or to put it another way, with the same impact you'd feel as if you fell three stories.

A properly worn safety belt keeps that second collision - the human collision - from happening.
