Why is it such a big deal about being on the cell phone while driving?

I know it can be distracting, but what about eating in the car, staring at the speedometer, looking at ur kids in the back seat, putting makeup on.........what is the difference????

there is something different and more demanding about a person on the other end who is NOT in the car with you. It takes more attention |

Nobody should be doing makeup while driving. Basically, it is just a large safety concern. Whenever I'm driving the people who always turn early are on their cell phones. It's just unsafe and silly. Calling people and texting are very dangerous. It also distracts people for a long period of time. |

Hey why not allow Drinking and Driving then. Sure you don't have full attention or great reflexes, but who does? The idea is they outlaw what they can. You CAN'T outlaw kids in the car. You can't say people can't pick-up food, or take make-up in to a car. Sure you can say the driver can't do it, but how would you catch them. Cell phones are easier to catch then most of this stuff. As to staring at the speedometer, well I have cruise control so I can basically ignore it once I hit the speed I want to go(yeah I know don't use cruise in bad weather).
Oh and I think there are laws about being overly distracted while driving. The reason for a cell phone ban is because the police WON'T ENFORCE the laws. Besides if they ban cell phones in cars maybe they can put jammers in the cars, may be an inconvenience for the passenger but I'd live with it if I was a passenger, and I'd be willing to pull over for a moment if the passenger needed to make an important call. |

There really is no difference. That's why some of the things you mentioned (like putting on makeup) are even more frowned upon than driving with a cellphone. |

difference is it is easier to get into car accidents. and how often do you sit there and just stare at the speedometer? that's pretty sad your suppose to glance at it..and as far as your kids in the back seat you glance in the mirror. putting on makeup should be a law.
this law started when a man was dialing on his cell phone and crashed into a car killing a 2 year old little girl. the family went to congress to try to get a law enforced not to use the phone while driving.
most states has these laws including chicago. but not the suburbs. |

I believe that all those things are probably not the best things to do, but where all of the things you mentioned really only last a few seconds, cell phone conversations tend to last for a few minutes. Plus, during the other distractions your focus is still within the car but with a cell phone your attention is on a far away person.
Personally, I think it isn't a problem for people who are use to talking while driving, but I don't do it myself simply because I can't. |
