ride on a motorcycle (and in some states without a helmet) which has very little safety protection, yet in some states a person can get a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt in a car?

In all reality, you can blame this on the federal government in Washington, D.C. As i have read in newspapers over the years, if states would not comply with the federal's wishes they would not give the states their share of transportation funding for road repairs, etc... Last example I remember reading was Montana's reinstatement of a 'posted' speed limit on highways. Used to be 'safe and prudent' 65 mph at night. It was fun going fast in the experimental cars, better than circles on a test track. |

There was a time when people were allowed to decide for themselves how safe they wanted to be.
The attitude was "HEY, if they crash, they are only hurting themselves, right?"
Then, the Govt figured out that a lot of these people had no medical insurance, and were ending up in county hospitals, or being buried at taxpayer (Govt) expense. CAN'T HAVE THAT!!!!!!
THAT'S why we have seat belt and helmet laws. NOT because they care about your safety. The bottom line is ALWAYS $$$$ |

Laws are different from state to state, motorcycle laws are not as strict as automobile laws. |

A seatbelt would be a bad idea on a motorcycle because they fall down all the time. People need to have freedom of movement to prevent injury during a fall. |

Not only would a seatbelt on a motorcycle be unfeasible, its just unpractical. Its better to have the ability to fall or slide away from your motorcycle in a car accident then being dragged along with it. Seatbelt requirements are only for cars that have it installed. If you really don't want to wear a seatbelt, try finding older cars where there wasn't any seatbelts installed, that is one way to avoid wearing a seatbelt. |

It just depends on the law in each respective state. I think that it seems pretty obvious that there should be laws that motorcyclists should wear helmets and motorists should wear seatbelts, but that's just me. |
